This one is really good!

I saw the trailer of this film when I was less than ten years old, here in Brazil, where it was named "A Fogo e a Sangue". I was fascinated by the few scenes I saw, specially one that shows Stephen McNally boxing. The scenery and color cinematography were astonishing. Being underage I could not see the film. I saw it recently, more than fifty years after and went through a great Proustian experience. Unlike many westerns that age and become naive or too predictable or full of clichés, this one maintains its appeal. McNally is the detective that is sent to find out who is behind a continuous robbery of the train carrying mail. He was boxing for a living and does not want to give it up for a low salary, but when he takes a good look at his face, and sees how it is becoming deformed, he decides to carry on the mission. Alexis Smith is the saloon singer he falls in love with, she is quite a presence. McNally pretends he is an outlaw and is sent to prison where he becomes friendly with one of the key members of the gang. There are constant scenes of action, and never a dull moment. This is a really good one.

Harrison elevates The Film From Average To Enjoyable.

The plot is not original...Mistress is Murdered,Married Man accussed...Wife stands by him. But Sir Rex Harrison makes you believe in the story. Harrison gives an extremely fine and brilliant performance which raises the film from a typical pot boiler into the story of a regretful innocent man. Lily Palmer (at the time..Mrs. Harrison) is also in fine form as his on screen wife.

Country bumpkin Aaron Slick has been unsuccessfully courting pretty young widow Josie Berry for years. Josie yearns for a fling in the big city. With $20,000 from a crooked deal stashed in their trunk, Bill Merridew and his "kissing cousin" Gladys, stars, in a relative sense, of a touring tent show stop at Josie's farm. Merridew, actually hiding out, thinks there is oil on the farm and Aaron, knowing otherwise, tricks him into buying the farm for a large sum. Josie takes the money and runs to Chicago, with Merridew, realizing he was tricked, in hot pursuit. Aaron arrives in time to keep Josie from letting Merridew "invest" her money.

Silly nonsense

I have to admit I watched this oddity out of curiosity because of Dinah Shore's oft repeated put-downs of it. Whenever her film career was brought up over the years on her television show Dinah would mockingly mention this film with a wry smile and a chuckle, it's easy to see why that would be her reaction.

Maybe not the worst movie ever made but a dumb, flat footed concoction to be sure. If the horrible title wasn't enough of a warning, although the alternate title "Marshmallow Moon" isn't much better, the basic plot summary should warn off most people. Stereotypes abound and the musical numbers are mediocre but it has nice color photography and an amusing supporting performance by Minerva Urecal. As for the two leads, Dinah is almost idiotically naive and too chipper for words, Alan Young starts out as an annoying bumpkin but gets better as the film goes along. A forgettable enterprise best viewed, if at all, by those who enjoy campy foolishness.

Visually beautiful but a bit cold.

Second effort in Carné 's second career,this movie is all the same superior to the mediocre "la Marie du port" released the precedent year. At first sight,"Juliette" appears as a continuation of the ambitious (and highly successful)1936-1946 period.The scenes in jail use almost the same thud in the soundtrack as in "le jour se lève" ;it is a return to the fantastic which Carné broached in "les visiteurs du soir" .And the dreams of faraway islands ("Quai des brumes" ) in the sun have been replaced by pure dreams to escape the harsh reality.... ...which shows a strong influence of Henry Hathaway's "Peter Ibbetson" (1935).Both are technically and visually splendid but lack true emotion.In spite of Gerard Philippe 's intense performance,it does not always work,but when it odes ,it rises the film above Carné's post "portes de la nuit" production:the village where the inhabitants have no more memories,and of course do not know how they lost them.So they try to appropriate the others' ones,here the hero Michel's.Michel is in search of Juliette (Suzanne Cloutier,who was Welles's Desdemona in "Othello"),but for these guys the girl may be their daughter or wife ,a grave or the name of a boat.There are other strong scenes in the forest where dancers are waltzing while a fortune-teller tells ... only the past.

On the other hand ,all that concerns the "prince " and the hints at Perrault's fairytale "the blue beard" are less successful:Carné probably loved Cocteau's "la Belle et la Bete" (1946) and the poet's influence can be felt in Trauner's film set.And Carné and his playwright borrow from Fritz Lang too:the last forbidden door was already used two years before in "secret beyond the door" .

That makes a big difference with,say,"les enfants du paradis":nothing predated what would become the beloved film of the French cinema.During his heyday,Carne did influence the others ,(for instance ,"les visiteurs du soir"paved a reliable way for Delannoy-Cocteau's "l'eternel retour")in 1950 he was influenced by them.

The movie has a strange structure which recalls another Lang (again!) work,"the woman in the window" (1944):reality (10 min),then a long dream,and return to reality for the last fifteen minutes where we meet again two characters of the dream.One should note that in the dream,the events that lead Michel to jail are told to the audience ,but the connection reality/fantasizing is not very obvious and when it is ,it often verges on childish symbolism.

Should appeal to offbeat works buffs,and of course to Carné's fans.But might bore the others.

Trigger&Son versus The Phantom

Trigger, Jr. finds Roy Rogers heading a traveling circus that is looking to put up at Dale Evans ranch for winter quarters. Unfortunately her father George Cleveland owns the place and he's an old circus man himself who's sworn off the sawdust. Still he lets them stay for a bit.

Turns out he needs Roy around because he's in a battle with Grant Withers of the Range Patrol. Withers has himself a real nice protection racket going. Those ranches who don't employ him somehow keep losing their stock.

Withers during the course of the film employs the services of a killer white stallion that was a former army horse that the army ordered destroyed. Trigger tangles with the horse they call the Phantom and is injured and has hysterical blindness in their first encounter. Guess who wins the return bout. Here's a hint, think Louis and Schmeling.

Roy and Dale really do take a back seat to Trigger and his problems in this film. They do however get to sing a very nice duet entitled May the Good Lord Take A Liking To You which sold a few records back in the day. I have it on one of my old record albums. Roy did all right in the recording field, but never was a blockbuster best seller the way his singing cowboy rival Gene Autry was.

It's not a bad film, but Trigger really should have been billed first.

Scotland Yard vs. Commie saboteurs

An otherwise workmanlike British thriller with familiar overtones of anti-Communist paranoia is salvaged by a lively script that underplays the bellicose propagandizing of other, similar witch-hunts. The emphasis instead is on action and character and some colorful local dialogue, as a network of saboteurs infiltrates the highest (and lowest) levels of democracy with nefarious plots to undermine England's power structure. The enemy agents are never precisely identified (it's clear who they are long before the authorities catch them 'Red' handed), and of course they're no match for the stiff upper lips of Scotland Yard, although it takes an extended gun battle at the Battersea power station to prove it. The film was less flattering and thus less popular than its predecessor, 'Seven Days to Noon', but seen today it remains an enjoyable, well-crafted relic from the warmer days of the Cold War.

While We Clean The Pool

Esther Williams set on the MGM lot must have been in repair, maybe the pool needed a chlorine refill because none of the spectacular aquatic scenes associated with her films will be found in Texas Carnival. In fact this is really a Red Skelton film and the powers that be at MGM who always liked to keep their contract players working said do this film while we clean the pool.

It's not the greatest Esther Williams or even Red Skelton film, but it does have an amusing moment or two. Red and Esther are working at a dunk tank in a cheap carnival when an inebriated Keenan Wynn shows up and through a combination of circumstances Williams and Skelton wind up going to a Texas resort being mistaken for Wynn and his sister Paula Raymond.

They both find love and trouble at the resort with Williams taking a real liking to Howard Keel who is the foreman of Wynn's ranch and Red falling for the tap dancing sheriff's daughter in the person of Ann Miller. Red also by playing up to the big Texas cattle baron manages to lose $17,000.00 dollars in what the Texans just call a friendly game among millionaires.

As I said Texas Carnival is clearly more Red's film than Esther's and he dominates with a hilarious chuck wagon race finale and one of his patented drunk scenes. What's interesting is that in this film Skelton had Keenan Wynn to contend with in the inebriation competition. Both of these guys have played incredible imbibing scenes in their respective films.

In his memoirs Howard Keel says that Red Skelton was a comic genius, but so much so that his contemporaries had trouble keeping up with him. In that barroom scene with Keenan Wynn it took half a day to shoot because Wynn couldn't help breaking up at his performance.

Don't look for too much aquatics in this Esther Williams film, but it's a not bad Red Skelton comedy.
