Review :

Worth seeing as a nearly successful attempt

The Secret People is worth seeing as much for what it did not accomplish as for what it did. It seems to me that only Hitchcock's Sabotage deals with the same sort of moral dilemmas that this film attempts to portray. Both Sabotage and Secret People were filmed in dark London streets and ominous back streets. In fact, the cinematography is literally so dark that it is often difficult to make out the action. In both films, an atmosphere of dread and secrecy hangs over the characters. However, despite the strong bond between the sisters, you never feel the same anguish shown in Sabotage by the wife of the saboteur. The film could have been a lot more forceful in setting up its moral conflicts. Of course, it is worth while just to see the young Audrey Hepburn dance classical ballet, something we were never to see again on film. And to see her before she became a major star. No Givenchy fashions in this one!

....when France used to colonize (and civilize it)!When you know how that story ends ,such words make you wonder....

Gerard Philipe precisely plays a music teacher who 's dreaming his life away.His daydreaming takes him back to the French revolution -with all the usual clichés- ,to 1900 and to French Algeria .THe moral of this story is that you haven't got to travel far to find happiness cause it's always near you.

Two gorgeous ladies ,Gina Lollobrigida - he met the precedent year in the highly superior "Fanfan la Tulipe"- and Martine Carol give Philipe adequate support.

Probably inspired by "the secret life of Walter Mitty " (1947)

When Doris sings "April in Paris" all is forgiven...

True, even for the breezy 1950s, the plot for this musical is as light as a feather--but if you are a DORIS DAY fan, as I certainly was during these early Day films at Warner Bros., you'll be enchanted by her way with a song--particularly "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight", "April in Paris" and "That's What Makes Paris Par-ee". And on top of that, she excels in all of her dance routines, even those in which RAY BOLGER clearly has the spotlight to himself.

It's one of those mistaken identity plots that Warners used extensively throughout the '40s and '50s, something about a showgirl being mistaken for a diplomat and mistakenly invited to represent the U.S. at a French festival. Naturally, all is straightened out in time for a happy ending although I can't say I detected any real chemistry between Bolger and Day--even in a musical where logic doesn't really matter.

The dances staged by LeRoy Prinz are not the best, but there are some cheerful, well staged moments when Bolger gets to do his tap routines and limber legged dancing. All in all, it passes the time pleasantly if you have a weakness for musicals the way they were in the '50s. And Doris proves that singing wasn't her only asset. Her dancing is also very professional (and not surprisingly, she intended to become a dancer before an accident ruined her plans and she switched to singing).

Jacques Becker: cinema as art

Jacques Becker was an artist and a director. His legacy is a trilogy of masterpieces: "Casque d'Or", "Touchez pas au Grisbi", "Le Trou", three luminous instances of cinema as art.

The linear story of "Casque d'Or" has the neatness of a Maupassant's tale. We are transferred into a most glorious epoch for French culture and art: the decline of the 19th century, the age of Impressionism. Marie (Simone Signoret) is a blond beauty, a cheerful "lost woman". She's the girl-friend of a member of a gang of small-time but ruthless criminals. She falls in first-sight-love with George Manda (Serge Reggiani) a former crook, now a honest carpenter. Predictable troubles ensue...

The atmosphere of the epoch is wonderfully recreated, with a black-and-white photography of indescribable beauty. An Impressionist Master behind the camera couldn't have done better. And, in fact, Becker was a favorite "student" of director Jean Renoir, Auguste Renoir's son. Becker's characteristic narrating style is nostalgic, serene, gently ironic. He deliberately avoids over-dark tones in his representation of the underworld, even in the middle of tragic events.

Simone Signoret is a charismatic presence on the screen: outstanding is her use of body-language to draw Marie's character, both a romantic enamoured woman and a cynical harlot. Reggiani is excellent as the laconic, tough Manda: he utters some twenty words along the whole movie, yet we perfectly understand his peculiar honor code, his profound love for Marie, his unselfish devotion to friendship. Splendid is Leca (Claude Dauphin), the boss of the gang, officially a respectable well-off wine-dealer: proficient, cool-headed, extremely cunning and Machiavellian, always ready to betray his own men to pursue his dirty purposes. Indeed, great care is paid to the design of all characters, with superb acting by the whole cast.

Exquisite poetic touches permeate the movie... Marie drags Manda into a church, where a simple wedding (of unknown middle-class people) is taking place. Shortly after, Manda is impatient "Let's go"; and Marie "No, just another minute"... and she contemplates the wedding with a dreaming smile...

"Casque d'Or": a perfect work of art.

Lots of real Navy scenery plus some laughs

This is not especially well written. The songs are not memorable. The cast, however, squeezes a lot out of this Martin and Lewis in the Navy situation. They both look great as young sailors. They are believable. The scenes on the submarine show how cramped it must have been on those underwater missions in the 1950s and before.

Lots of sailors in many scenes. Hundreds perhaps, in a big outdoor exercise field, and again in a boxing arena.

You will see James Dean in his scene. He does stand out even though he is an extra here. In a scene where Jerry walks across a busy street we see some of his "almost accident" comedy which he would bring into play years later in The Patsy.

Dean giving Jerry boxing instructions is a good comedy skit to watch for. Jerry in the boxing ring shows his high energy that was his trademark in the late '40s and early '50s. Dean and Jerry dancing is a bit of a treat. Not great, but better than most non dancing movies.

Worth seeing if you don't mind black and white. Good ending.

Tough Enough

A Completely Forgotten Little Film that is quite Good and quite Different. A Number of Film-Noirs took on the PTSD of Returning WWII Veterans and most of them are Well Known and most of them are Fine Films. This one is Unique in that it is Virtually Unknown.

It has a Very Strange Feel to it and is a Serious and Surreal, at Times, Study that is more than Competently Directed and Acted. The Children are Central to the Plot and the Little Ones are Refreshingly Restrained from Stereotype.

Some of the Dialog is Succinct and Stringent. After a Tense Set-Up the Mentally Disturbed Ralph Meeker, at His Best, Confronts the Parents about the Kids and Tersely Taunts..."What did you think I'd do, chop them up into little pieces and put them in a suitcase?"

Tough Stuff for the Era and Reflects the Tone of the Movie. It is a Suspenseful and Fittingly Bizarre Film that Deserves more Attention.

It isn't us. It's this house, it's full of her!

The Late Edwina Black is directed by Maurice Elvey and adapted to screenplay by Charles Frank and David Evans from the play of the same name by William Dinner and William Morum. It stars David Farrar, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Roland Culver and Jean Cadell. Music is by Allan Gray and cinematography by Stephen Dade.

It's Victorian England and Edwina Black has just died. When a fatal dosage of arsenic is revealed to be the cause of death, suspicion falls on Edwina's husband Gregory (Farrar) and her house companion Elizabeth (Fitzgerald). More so when it becomes apparent that Gregory and Elizabeth are having a passionate love affair. Intrepid Inspector Martin (Culver) investigates as housekeeper Ellen (Cadell) looks on with interest from the shadows.

Under seen Brit period mystery resplendent with moody melodramatics and some spooky shenanigans. This is all about a mystery to be solved in a big Victorian house bathed in shadows and low lights. There is only three suspects, so for those paying attention from the off the mystery is a little weak, while there's some over acting indicative of the time.

However, Elvey and Dade prove very adept at creating a house of ominous atmosphere, where although the hinted at supernatural elements are not in the realm of horror, they work well in context of the back drop. Characterisations are nicely drawn, especially when the harmony of Gregory and Elizabeth's affair begins to crack.

It all builds to a quintessentially olde British finale, as the great Roland Culver gets to do his Hercule Poirot act, all neatly revealed over a cup of tea! Hooray! 7/10

Loretta Cons No One Here ***1/2

Well done soap-opera theatrics where injured soldier, Jeff Chandler, falls for nurse Loretta Young and the two soon wed and have a lovely daughter. Sounds typical with a poor girl marrying a rich, handsome businessman like Jeff.

The big secret is that Loretta was in jail as no one believed her innocence in the participation of a robbery.

She never told Jeff about her former life. Years later, the guy who led her down this path, suddenly shows up one afternoon and kidnaps her with the child. After another robbery, there is a high speed chase and the guy is killed instantly. Loretta and daughter survive the wreck physically-but there are plenty of emotional problems as a result.

An enraged Jeff accuses Ms. Young of being a tramp and immediately files for divorce and gains full custody of the child.

Loretta takes a job as an entertainer for children's parties. Her sister-in-law comes has her come over. Since this is years later, the child does not know that Loretta is her mother. The kid has hangups. (Who wouldn't after all this?) Unexpectedly, Jeff comes home and there are fireworks.

While we see many clichés here, the film is nicely done with Chandler showing that he was a good actor. His emotional outbursts are believable. Young is subdued but as always turns in a competent performance.

The film was originally supposed to be called "Magic Lady," but there is no magic here. Just a tale of tell your entire background to your mate-to-be.

The sweetest musical

I have seen this movie many many times and will do so in future. Naushad, in my books, was the greatest composer of Hindi film Sangeet (runners up being C. Ramchandra and Shankar Jaikishan).To bring out the innermost emotions of a Raaga into a 3 or 4 minute song is the accomplishment of a genius. If you want a child to learn Raagdari, just let him listen and learn to play these songs. Then you don't have to force him to learn music. By the way, one of the greatest Bhajans "Man Tarapat Hari Darashan Ko Aaj" shows that the only religion of the artists (song writer Shakeel Badayuni, composer Naushad, singer Mohamad Rafi) is their art.

Isn't the matrimonial agency subject interesting?As the Beatles sing "Ah look at all those lonely people?Where do they all come from?Where do they all belong?".To my knowledge,this is the only FRench movie which deals with it.

Bernard Blier is a bachelor and it is sure easy to see the reason why: an over possessive mother ;he once met a girl ,Gilberte ,but he threw it all away ...He inherits a matrimonial agency;after contemplating selling it ,he chooses to manage it.And Le Chanois does then what he does best: he creates one hundred characters ,one quality which was almost lost after the Nouvelle Vague rising.

Like Le Chanois's precedent work "Sans Laisser d' Adresse" ,"Agence Matrimoniale" is populist cinema.Not for highbrows ,but for people who like the old cinema,the one which tells stories.

CAMICIE ROSSE ("Red Shirts"),also known as ANITA GARIBALDI, is about Giuseppe Garibaldi's campaign in the north of Italy to oust the Austrians. Anna Magnani plays his firebrand wife, brandishing her sword and exhorting weary troops to acts of courage until she finally dies from the stress. The film has some nice battle scenes and the strong presence of Raf Vallone as Italy's George Washington but rates unfavorably alongside the other great Italian patriotic epics, Blasetti's "1860" and Rossellini's VIVA L'ITALIA. The cast and crew must have had a ball making this flick, since it has so many funny bits in it.Just listen to this exchange between Robert Newton doing his never-equaled pirate character as Blackbeard, and the lovable lug Bill Bendix, of Life of Riley fame, as Worley, the dim-witted first mate. Blackbeard is pulling up a rope that the hero has used to climb into the Captain's cabin, and says, "I be fishin' for a rat!" Worley: "Why, are ya hungry?" Don't miss The Funeral at Sea ("For distance this time!") Watch Edward Maynard eye Linda Darnell's lavish expanse of bosom and say, "Never mind the measurements!"

And while you're thinking about the plot...how _did_ they ever get off that island?

An authentic rodeo movie

My vote is somewhat biased as my Father was in this movie. But, this picture was a fairly accurate depiction of rodeo life in the late 40's early 50's. All of the riding was real and done by my Father and Casey Tibbs including the crazy scene with two bulls in the arena at the same time, anyone with a fair idea of rodeos would realize the craziness of that stunt! The storyline is a familiar one, new guy on the scene looks to old pro for guidance, gets rich and famous, becomes arrogant and then learns his lesson.

The difference between this movie and some of the more modern rodeo movies is the reality factor. The characters are not made out to be "larger than life" Bronco Busters showed what it was like to live the rodeo lifestyle in that era. Cowboys were down to earth, honest and solid people. They were on the road almost all of time going from one rodeo to the next, living out of trailers (sometimes horse trailers) motel rooms etc.. I know this for a fact, I was there.

A haunting theme ... and unforgettable sequences.

"Angel Face", according to one film journal, has become a cult film with a strong repeat-viewer base ... a bit like the children at a scary movie who cover their eyes but continue to peek through fingers just the same. I'm an "AF" fan, too. One of the film's most powerful aspects is the utterly chilling soundtrack score with its turbulent minor-key piano. To my mind, Dimitri Tiomkin never composed a more appropriate theme than this. And during the lonely nighttime scene when Jean Simmons' character revisits the windswept driveway where her parents had met their horrific death, when the wordless chorus swells into Tiomkin's theme, see if you don't agree that this is one of cinema's most memorable moments. Highly recommended to all except young children and sensitive adults for its surprising and shocking imagery.
