In order to end the cattle rustling, Gene Autry becomes one of the first ranchers in his territory to fence in the open range with barbed wire and he incurs the wrath of small-ranch owner Ginger Kirby. Range warfare, fanned by livery stable owner Sandy Reeves, breaks out between the two factions of ranchers to differ on the use of barbed-wire fences. Reeves hopes the fighting will drive the cattlemen out of business and he can use the range for sheep. Gene and Ginger patch up their differences and with the help of Duke Kirby, her younger brother, Autry discovers that Reeves is responsible for most of the trouble. Cowpunchers, believing that the wire will put them out of work and urged on by Reeves, engage Gene's men in a gun battle.

what a letdown

This movie is very disappointing. The four songs are extremely unconforming; character actions are too changeable and illogical; and there's no sidekick. Rancher Gene intends to hinder rustlers by putting barbed-wire fencing around his spread, but not all cattlemen favor this tactic. In addition, many hired-hands think that it'll jeopardize their jobs. Concentrating on an ensuing confrontation instead of profitable herding, COULD result in some failures, which would cause non-payment of taxes, leading to a sheriff's sale of not-too-expensive real estate, which the bad guys would buy for sheep-grazing. Ginger and her younger brother, Duke, are Autry's wavering neighbors. Liveryman Sandy and his bogusly-estranged partner keep things riled up. Look elsewhere, however, if you're seeking an exemplary western.

Big-time racketeer Martin Martin, on the eve of his projected move into New York politics, barely escapes the District Attorney's men who attempt to arrest him for a murder committed five-years earlier by Martin and his former partner Dane Cory. Martin, who knows that Cory has copped a plea with the D.A. to save himself, arranges a meeting. At the meeting, Cory's henchman, Cute Freddie, shoots Martin and the latter kills Freddie. O'Brien, Florey almost manage to salvage offbeat Damon Runyon crime story

The title character is a mutt, and the story comes from the flamboyant pen of Damon Runyon. That's hardly the recipe for a moody, offbeat crime story, but Robert Florey, perhaps drawing on his French roots, adds that little je ne sais quoi and comes up with a casserole a cut above the ordinary. It's not quite a success but an honorable and occasionally arresting try.

Runyon is best remembered for his sentimental yarns about Broadway, that garish gulch that disrupts Manhattan's tidy grid - stories of gold-diggers and raffish sportsmen, of old silver-tongued sots and big bruisers with 24-karat hearts. But he told more downbeat tales as well, as evidenced by Johnny One-Eye, where Florey more skillfully modulates the movie's dark tonality than did Irving Reis in The Big Street, with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda, another of Runyon's more shadowed stories (perhaps Reis was overruled by Runyon, who acted as producer).

Save for Pat O'Brien, Florey's smallish cast is nowhere near the caliber of The Big Street's (its next most recognizable member is Wayne Morris). Partners in petty crime years ago, O'Brien and Morris whacked a double-crosser and tossed his body off the Staten Island ferry. Since then they've drifted apart and gone legit, with O'Brien now occupying a pinnacle not only on Park Avenue but in the city's power structure as well.

We get only a brief glimpse of his affluence and influence, however, in a scene where he brings hookers to his penthouse to pair off with politicos. An epicene blackmailer (Lawrence Cregar) working for Morris cuts short the festivities by calling down a police raid. O'Brien flees out into the city's meaner streets with only one mission - to find Morris and exact his revenge. He catches a bullet along the way, and holes up in a condemned brownstone in the Village, where he meets up with the poor mutt, Johnny One-Eye.

Here the plotting plummets into the, well, Runyonesque. The dog belongs to the little girl of Morris' mistress (Dolores Moran), thus becoming the canine link which fatally reunites the old partners. Enough said, except to note that the tot (Gayle Reed) will harden the warmest of hearts, suggesting the least endearing attributes of Shirley Temple as Little Miss Marker, another of Runyon's creations.

Florey can't quite toss out all the aggressively poignant slop - if he had, there would have little left to work with - but he accentuates the noirish elements (he had just directed John Payne in The Crooked Way, one of his more solid credits). During O'Brien's wounded, nocturnal flight, the skyscrapers loom like jagged black precipices. And the scenes in the abandoned town house, where he's visited by the little girl, bring to mind, in their sense of menacing isolation in the middle of a teeming city, Ted Tetzlaff's The Window, a hit of the previous year. (There's also a freighted scene with a boozing veterinarian that looks forward to a similar one in Andre De Toth's Crime Wave four years later.) Sad that Florey was relegated to nothing better than the Bs (even to the Bs among the Bs); given better material and looser budgets, his distinctive touch might have grown into a major talent.

Prelude To The Exxon Valdez

SYNOPSIS: A tramp steamer outruns a typhoon to Capetown, South Africa, with a disgruntled crew and a love triangle between the Captain, the Chief Engineer and his fiancé.

CONCEPT IN RELATION TO THE VIEWER: Second chances and re-thinking past mistakes. Macho defeats love in the short-term, but compassion triumphs in the end. A trip back to simpler times when everything was black and white, literally.

PROS AND CONS: This film was supposedly made as a follow up to "All The King's Men", which also starred Crawford and Ireland. "All The King's Men" got a lot of Oscar buzz, so the studios thought they could make lightening strike twice. They sort of missed the mark. This is a competent film, but can hardly be considered great film making.

This film rehashes the tried and true cinema gimmick of trapping adults in a confined space so they must face their past and confront the present. There is a bit of a fantasy element in the concept of a world in which tramp steamers were the semi-trucks of their day, ferrying oil and cargo across the ocean highways of the world. Crewed by men with checkered pasts who lived a nomadic lifestyle. It probably isn't very accurately portrayed in this film, but it does make you wonder.

The camera tends to linger on Ellen Drew's character a lot and she is working her "Betty Davis Eyes" as much as possible. The script and plot lines of the film seem a bit strained from time to time. The roots of the past love affair between the captain and the fiancé are never explained. The small boy that longs to go to sea only to be crushed by oil cans in the storm doesn't really make a lot of sense and his acting is terrible.

This is not a very deep film. The basic concept is how folks forced together on a ship in the middle of the ocean have to work as a team and overcome their past differences. Nothing more, nothing less.

More than 'gets by'

Amazing how long it took for me to see this spirited 'B' Technicolor Fox musical on broadcast TV, having seen most of the other 'A' and 'B' Fox musicals of the '40s and early '50s. Essentially, a combo remake of the B&W 'Tin Pan Alley' and the Technicolor 'The Dolly Sisters', the latter being a semi-remake of the former, with 2 of the original 4 stars. Whereas 'Tin Pan Alley'is set just before and during the US involvement in WWI, the present film has a similar relationship with WWII. Both films turn into flag-wavers toward the end, as the male stars are drafted into the army, and the female stars conveniently go overseas to entertain the troops. In the present film, 'B' singer-dancers June Haver and Gloria DeHaven get a chance to shine without the dominance of 'A' stars, such as Betty Grable, Alice Faye, and Carmen Miranda. I thought they made a great pair of performers, whether performing singly, together, or with Dennis Day. In contrast to the legally blond Dolly sisters, the present sisters sported contrasting blond and brunette hair, foreshadowing the Marylin Monroe-Jane Russell team in 'Gentlemen Prefer Blonds', a few years later. The up and coming June Haver costarred with Betty Grable in 'The Dolly Sisters': a replacement for the retiring Alice Faye, who costarred with Grable in 'Tin Pan Alley'. In the present film, the sisters are much more of a sister act than in 'Tin Pan Alley', where Faye and Grable mostly did their own numbers. In this respect, it more resembles 'The Dolly Sisters', which was also filmed in Technicolor. However, the latter film mostly featured gaudy turn of the century costumes, whereas wardrobes in the present film were mostly kept relatively simple.

Bland William Lundigan, along with Dennis Day, replaced John Payne and Jack Oakie, respectively, as composer-lyricists. Like Oakie, Day contributes several songs, alone or with one or two of 'the girls'. Some like his distinctive Irish tenor voice, others do not. Very different from Oakie's vaudevillian style. Unlike the previous films, this one featured a variety of additional stars in minor roles or cameo, perhaps most notably Harry James(Betty Grable's husband), motherly Thelma Ritter, a young Steve Allen as a disc jockey, and vaudevillian-styled, tall and lanky, Dan Dailey in a surprise song and dance with 'the girls', near the ending. The latter was a toned-down counterpart to the memorable 'Sheik of Araby' song and dance number in 'Tin Pan Alley', which had rotund Billy Gilbert(as the sheik) performing with 'the girls'.

Dailey reportedly was perhaps Grable's favorite male costar, although

not having quite the looks of a matinée idol. Both this film and 'The Dolly Sisters' sorely missed the comedic and all around vaudevillian talents of Jack Oakie, as in 'Tin Pan Alley', as a counterweight to the melodramatic scenes. Even Clark Gable reportedly was hesitant to do a film with the scene-stealing Oakie. If Dailey had taken Lundigan's place in the present film and been allowed to participate in more song and dance routines, this would have largely compensated for the absence of Oakie. Thankfully, the present film was lighter on heavy romantic melodrama than the previous two, where this got tedious at times.

Haver, was kept under contract with Fox as a possible replacement for the older Betty Grable, while sometimes starring in her own 'B' films. She seemed to lack something exciting in Grable's personality and looks that appealed to audiences, and never became a big star, although quite beautiful and talented. She should not be confused with June Havoc, sister of Gypsy Rose Lee, who was a supporting actress in the very popular Fox musical 'Hello, Frisco, Hello', among other Fox films of the same era. Gloria DeHaven basically followed a similar path,although I found her quite appealing in this and other films.

The list of songs sung or danced to includes: "There Will Never Be Another You", "It's Been a Long,Long, Time","I'll Get By", "Deep in the Heart of Texas","I've Got the World on a String", "Taking a Chance on Love", "You Make Me Feel So Young", "MacNamara's Band", and "America, I Love You": the latter being the only tune sung in both 'Tin Pan Alley' and the present film, symbolizing the flag-waving orientation of the films.

I saw this movie in a Brazilian cable television expecting to see another great Japanese classic. I was absolutely wrong: "Bara Gessen" is nothing but a melodramatic Japanese soap-opera, full of scandals, shallow romances and situations. The confused plot begins with many characters without previous development, and is full of ellipsis and insinuations, being sometimes very difficult to follow and understand. I found interesting the story be supported by women, one of them very powerful, as lead characters. My vote is four.

Romantic movie

This is great romantic movie, with unforgettable Mexican music. The brief plot: the movie is about two men in Mexican revolution, one being a high military officer and another, being sentenced for capital punishment. The mother of one of them come to see the prisoner, but she was not told that these guys, previously close friends, are now adversaries. The movie has nice cinematography, was done in great BW, and was extremely popular in Yugoslavia in fifties. My mother used to watch the movie three times and cried each time, I watched that movie in the cinema on June 17th, 1986 and cried too. A copy of the movie has been preserved in the "La Cinémathèque de Yougoslavie" and I mention this because I've heard that the original negative has been lost, so somebody from Mexico might be interested in preserving this gem...

Sidetracked

This is a Public Service picture thinly disguised as a crime movie, and a very poor one too. You know you're in trouble when three, count 'em three governors get to pound the message home that Crime Does Not Pay. Except in politics, i guess.Man, those HUAC hearings must have really scared Jack Warner silly to produce such lame law and order tripe as this movie. It's clear from the get-go that these gangsters are basically two-bit crooks, cowards who hit women and on a one way trip to the death house. Movies like this are only of interest as a scary example of Fifties government propaganda. "Kids, these guys may look cool, but look how mean and stupid they are. I'm sure you'd all much rather be a stuffed shirt like the clever cops who are way smarter than those no-good goons. Now eat your greens and go do your homework!" I'm sure J. Edgar "What's the Mafia?" Hoover gave this his Seal of Approval. Forgettable and frightening Fifties fare.

An Aversion to the Craiture

Van Johnson and Elizabeth Taylor did two films together during their tenure at MGM and The Big Hangover is the first of them. He's a young law school graduate, top of his particular class, who is applying for an opening in a very prestigious white shoe law firm. She's the daughter of the firm's senior partner Percy Waram and she's crushing out big time on Van.

Van's got one unusual case of shell shock during the war. Two things happened to him, he had a close friend die in his arms in a plane being shot at with anti-aircraft guns and he nearly drowned in a cellar of a monastery that was being used as a hospital. The monks in the place made wine and after spending a good deal of time up to his neck in the stuff, the slightest taste or smell of liquor gets him cockeyed drunk.

It's an amusing bit for parties, but not at all social or business occasions. Liz turns amateur psychologist to discover what's ailing Van.

The Big Hangover is an amusing comedy from MGM, not hardly in the top ten of films for either of its leads. It does have an interesting subplot involving discrimination and the enforcement of anti-discrimination laws that were being passed by a lot of states at this time, New York among them where the story takes place. A Chinese doctor, Philip Ahn, is being thrown out of an apartment the owner is represented by Percy Waram's firm.

Which leads to the highlight of the film and the best performance in the film by Leon Ames who plays the city attorney who is charged with enforcement of the non-discrimination statute. After Johnson chastises him, Ames gives an eloquent statement about how money and success are the gods we cherish.

The Big Hangover is amusing in spots, is serious in spots, has a bit of trouble making its mind up whether it's a comedy or a drama of social significance. Still it is entertaining and fans of the two stars should like it.

Magnificent!

This is the greatest play by the Great Italian playwright, director and author Edoardo de Filippo. It combines drama, humour, the description of post-war Naples and the dynamics of a family in a unique and masterful way. To see Edoardo in person on stage was always a major treat. This movie is a fitting tribute to one of Italy's national treasures.

You will see yourself in every character in this very intelligent, entrancing movie. Though set in "the theatre," the story could just as easily have been told in a small town, a corporation – even a religious organization. Being set in the "glamorous" world of entertainment – its seems all the more timely in these days of fame, fortune and the insufficiency (almost shame) of being ordinary. The theatre setting also underscores the reality that the world is a stage, and all its people, players.

Would Have Been Better with Miss Withers As Originally Written.

The original story that inspired this film -- "Loco Motive" -- was a collaboration between Craig Rice and Stuart Palmer, featuring her alcoholic Chicago lawyer detective, John J. Malone, and his New York old-maid schoolteacher sleuth, Hildegarde Withers; it was the first of several stories (collected as "The People vs, Withers and Malone") teaming the two, generally in ways calculated to enrage and/or frustrate Malone's Chicago nemesis, Captain von Flanagan or Hildie's long-suffering New York Homicide detective, Inspector Oscar Piper.

Presumably because of rights issues -- money, perhaps, though this could have been during the time that Palmer (due to a divorce settlement) was intentionally making as little money as possible -- The Miss Withers part was rewritten to eliminate her.

It wasn't till some time later that an attempt was made to bring Hildie to the screen on TV, embodied in the formidable person of Eve Arden.

Other than disappointing fans of Miss Withers or of the original story in and of itself, this is a decent enough film of it.

A ridiculous movie

I saw The Torch when it came out in 1950. It was Thanksgiving weekend at Missouri U. in Columbia, and almost all the students were gone. Perhaps that's why this film was ever so briefly scheduled at the local theater. My friend (who later became my husband) and I were amazed that a movie this bad could be distributed and shown in the USA. Also, we were surprised that a movie star like Paulette Goddard would appear in such a film. It was so terrible that we have not forgotten it in 54 years and still laugh about it. I can still hear Paulette Goddard screeching. I can still see Armendariz swaggering in his huge sombrero. I remember acting so broad that even a teenager couldn't stand it. A "dark comedy/drama" indeed. What a ridiculous movie.

Review :

Silly acting. Some of it is laughable

Filmed by Eagle-Lion right after THE SUNDOWNERS (1950) near some of the same Amarillo locations and with returning cast members Chill Wills, Jack Elam and the 'star', gawky teenager John Drew Barrymore. No Robert Preston to give some weight to the film, this time.

Story boils down to a boy, "Cooncat" (Barrymore) running away from an abusive home and witnessing a murder committed by Elam and Dave Kashner. Only the local ranch owner Horse Davis (Basil Ruysdael) and his family don't believe him. They think Cooncat's seeing ghosts because Cooncat's describing some men that were killed during a range war 15 years previously. Of course there are no ghosts. Cooncat actually did see the murder. I won't give away the ending but lets just say it too is as anti-climatic as the THE SUNDOWNERS was.

This also suffers from some of the same disjointed editing that that earlier film had suffered from, as well as Barrymore doing his silly facial grimaces while he overacts his part. And the way John Archer treats his bride-to-be Kristine Miller, needs to be seen to be believed. He spanks her on the bottom for shooting down a pan off the wall in order to prove a point. Then they kiss and make up like nothing happened. UN-REAL. Obviously some of the details in the script weren't worked out for the audience ahead of time.

Also filmed in Technicolor with nice scenic West Texas locations, it's worth a look but it's not a keeper, in my opinion.

Meet the western, deglamorized: gunslinging makes you feel guilty, your ex is a prudish school teacher too hung up on your trail of corpses to see you, the town where you've decamped is filled with half-witted bums, puritans, celebrity-gazers and a most unlikely marshal, and somewhere on your trail are three brothers of the dead smart ass who drew on you in the last town. Jesus, do you need a whiskey.

No ordinary genre film, "The Gunfighter" (1950) is both a hugely satisfying entertainment and a conventional studio film with surprising depths. The surprise comes from the nature of the western in the mid-century where, with few exceptions, the black-and-white morality plays are as plain as the gunfire. Not so here, where we get the treat of seeing Gregory Peck play an antihero who has stepped far outside of conventional morality and now wants readmission, even though the bloodstains won't wash out. Welcome to Ambiguiety Gulch.

It's tempting to say that "Gunfighter" looks forward to the spaghetti western, especially in its themes of alienation and social revulsion. Frankly, though, it feels less like a western and more like a film noir. The feeling of claustrophobia is always near, whether in Peck's fear of another violent summons or in subplots involving the closeted desires of various townspeople to kill him (one gritty sequence in a boarding room is more unsettling than anything in Hawks or Ford). Surfaces are untrustworthy, motivations questionable, psychological derangement hovers in the wings, the "law" is both more and less than it appears, and as characters make startling pacts with their bloody pasts you can almost sense the triumphalism of the post-war years turning to anxiety and dread.

Comedy was her niche!

Ah, this is fun. I've heard that in this movie, Ms. Ball was the closest to her future TV hit persona. It still was not "Lucy unleashed" as we later experienced on TV, but the action is unleashed. They may just have unrolled some new hijinks in this movie. Haven't seen the likes of some of it. The action got so rough at times that I understand Ms. Ball sustained several injuries, with ongoing effects. That tells me she did her own stuff. It was pret-ty wild ... She did a comedy with a young William Holden, "Miss Grant Takes Richmond," before this. But it was this Fuller Brush Girl movie that was used in discussions with CBS for her own TV show, to demonstrate that she could do comedy.

I didn't see Ms. Ball's early films until several years ago, and found it a novelty seeing her in them. She was mostly in drama, only doing comedy toward the end of her early film career, and there were only a few. It was very interesting to see her in high fashion 40's clothes and hair. She was very glamorous in most of them, often a show girl, then a sophisticated, haughty type. The personality was so different - nothing like her upcoming "Lucy." She was called the "Queen of B pictures," which could be said about some others also. She did a lot of bit and small parts before moving into leads. One of the weightier ones was "Lured" with George Sanders and Cedric Hardwicke. She also co-starred with a young Henry Fonda in "The Big Street." They dated for a while. He thought she was gorgeous, and she is - a very attractive woman. It was when she started doing the comedies that she knew she had found her niche, and the Ricardos started working on the idea of a TV show.

Hers is a hard work, good luck story with a happy ending. After toiling in the trenches for so many years, she came out way on top with her own show, which was a solid success for decades. As everyone knows, her reruns are still in demand. She's a legend. What if she had quit or been unwilling to strike out into the new media (at that time)? She went on to do other films, such as "Mame" with Robert Preston. Hey, I think she broke out of B movies!! Don't cry for Lucy. She came into her dream. Can't put her down either. She just kept popping up and up and up.

I think most comedy fans will enjoy this movie. It has the wonderful Eddie Albert, who definitely plays second fiddle to Lucy, but with vigor. Ha! Try it; I think you'll like it.

Second Bananas take center stage .........

In this early 1950's sagebrush drama, two former Hopalong Cassidy sidekicks get a chance at starring roles. James Ellison and Russell Hayden do well in this western saga of a lawman tangling with the scalawag that gunned down his folks years before.

Especially notable is the casting of the great Fuzzy Knight in a dual role as Deacon and bad guy !! Knight often played sidekicks himself, but excels here in a more high profile part. The capable cast also includes Tom Tyler and the hard-working George Chesboro.

Even though the leads were not as well-known as other cowboy stars, this film is worth checking out. Its definitely B-level material, but fun for the western movie fan.
