Grim story of small band of cavalry trying to warn Custer

Perhaps the finest film to come from 'quickie' producer Lippert, this grim story of a band of calvary attempting to warn Custer holds up well after almost 50 years. Outstanding performances by a great supporting cast over-shadow what must have been a miniscule budget. Although the film claims to be based on a true incident, the curator of the Custer Battlefield Monument denies such an occurrence. Nonetheless, if you can find this one on video(not likely)or on the late show, it is well worth while.

Love is giving, even in such a fallen world!

While this film created a furor upon release, not only for its frank treatment of social and sexual mores in Germany during and after WWII, but also for a modest nude scene, it may seem tame today. Nonetheless, there is a vibrancy here that prefigures Fassbinder and an interesting approach to narrative, voice over, montage and framing that is very modern and adds quite a lot to what is basically a conventional tear jerker that adheres to somewhat traditional Sturm und Drang/Romantic conventions. Well worth the effort to see.

One of the finest "lost films."

There are several truly excellent movies that have apparently vanished from general distribution. THE BLUE VEIL sadly lies in a vault somewhere, for some unknown reason. My guess: some copyright dispute, be it literary or musical. Please, someone, "PAY THE TWO DOLLARS!"

As Louise, a governess, Jane Wyman gives a performance that is easily the equal of JOHNNY BELINDA. In two scenes alone, Miss Wyman could, and does, wring tears from a stone. She is supported by a fine cast which includes Joan Blondell, Charles Laughton and Natalie Wood. Performances which are of this caliber should not be allowed to disappear, unknown and unappreciated.

This was an RKO release, which spells TED TURNER. Why don't we bring pressure to bear where it counts? THE BLUE VEIL deserves to be seen.

Big gal Beverly Michaels chief attraction of cut-rate masochistic fantasy

Was Fritz Lang a fan of Hugo Haas? Distinctive elements of both Lang's Clash by Night and Human Desire are foreshadowed in Haas' Pickup (there's also an element left over from Jean Renoir's Woman on the Beach). But Czech-born Haas, a starvation-budget auteur of the 1950s, lacked the depth and style of his European colleagues. That's not so terrible, except that he also lacked their nerve, and as an actor rooted in comedy, the nerve for noir.

Towering Beverly Michaels finds herself on queer street and spots in lonely widower Haas a way off of it. He mans a milk-run railroad pit-stop but has $7300 in the bank; she knows because she snuck a look at his passbook and married him for it. Trackside life soon proves a drag for the high-maintenance blonde, however, and she nags him to fake a disability so they can take early retirement and move back to the comparatively bright lights of town; she also strikes up a romance with his relief man Allan Nixon.

Fate intervenes when Haas is suddenly struck deaf, putting his pension within reach. But just as suddenly he gets a face full of fender on a trip into town and regains his hearing – unbeknownst to his wife and his assistant. He listens impassively as they boldly exchange endearments, and just as mutely when Michaels works the flirtatious talk around to murder....

The strongest hand Haas has going for him in Pickup is Michaels, his off-screen wife at the time. Her grasp of the gold-digger's ways was as firm as that of any actress, and her physical stature was exceeded only by Hope Emerson's. But otherwise the film's cheapness shows; apart from scenes at a carnival which look like stock footage, the action is confined to Haas' shanty and a stretch of railroad track. And, having indulged himself in a masochistic fantasy, Haas seems too timid to follow it where it seems bound to go, taking abrupt refuge in a jarring change of tone just at the end. And that end, too, foreshadows the final shot of another Beverly Michaels film, Russell Rouse's Wicked Woman: Her bags packed, she hits the road.

Funny Hope-Hedy comedy

I read somewhere here in this forum a readers take on the Bob-Hedy friction. Let me settle this once and for all. Hedy was always Bob favorite...look at some of the old war newsreels with the stars getting involved in the war, in their own way. There's a clip where Bob is surprisingly sharing a bed with his crony, Bing Crosby and in his dreams, he keeps calling out for Hedy. Hedy was an MGM player, so odds were against them making a movie together, each under contract to different studios. It turned out that some of Hedy's best funny scenes were cut, because the studio head at Paramount, didn't want anyone to be more funnier than their bread and butter comedian. She resented it, after all she was in the midst of making a comeback, as they called it in those days, after her terrific success in Samson and Delilah for that same studio a year before. Its odd that in 1951, Bob and Hedy made a comedy radio stint on top of a U.S.Navy flattop, in front of the sailors, in San Diego port. They even made jokes about appearing together in that movie. So, if there was friction, it was short lived. As far as her role, she was suppose to be playing it straight to Bob's antics. To me,the funniest scenes involved Hedy, mainly because I was surprised at how well she did handle comedy. Her hitting Bob like a wildcat, after he 'punched' her. Her double take upon seeing "both" Bob's was priceless...and that ending, with her driving the fire truck.

Outstanding look at "the forgotten war's" home front.

This first-rate film about the effects of the Korean War on an Anytown U.S.A. deserves to be thought of in the same league as movies like 'The Best Years of Our Lives.' But just as history has done with the real wars, this movie seems to have gotten lost in the shadows of the much larger number of World War II dramas.

The Korean War came just five short years after WWII ended, just as many families whose lives were so disrupted by the bigger war were finally able to enjoy some peace and stability in their lives after struggles of readjustment. Lacking the impetus of a Pearl Harbor or the spectre of an Adolph Hitler, the draft was the prime mechanism for getting young men to the front lines in Korea. Older vets were now being asked to leave their homes and families again as well. This film shows surprising depth in its depiction of the problems and feelings of not only the eligible men, but their wives, mothers, fathers and girlfriends. The excellent script was written by Irwin Shaw based on magazine stories by Edward Newhouse and they provide us with an insightful look at this period in American history which doesn't get as much attention as the preceding or following decades.

Clay Blair called his book on the Korean conflict 'The Forgotten War' and this movie might be given a similar appellation, even though it deserves better. Simply as a piece of nostalgia it's enjoyable, but the movie is much more than that. It has a fine cast with many actors that even some of us baby boomers will recognize.

It is an entertaining and good comedy by Monicelli that makes us laugh and reflect.

"Esposito" (Toto) is a thief who cons tourists in Rome, but has the bad luck to return to coincide with one of his victims. Then they began a long chase by the police "Bottoni" (Aldo Fabrizzi) that finally was stopped. But in an oversight, "Esposito" manages to flee. Bottoni's superiors advise that, if it fails to capture the con man, will be without work. So "Bottoni" to capture, will enter the family circle "Esposito".

In the beginning, the director Mario Monicelli signed several films in collaboration with Steno, already showing his great talent for comedy, as in this case. Despite the comic tone that logically chairs the film, we must also highlight the successful scenes that it offers, about postwar Italian society, so the script is showing us the U.S. aid, poverty in urban suburbs, the economic troubles are subjected to destitute families, etc. Thus, the more inquires "Bottoni" on the "Esposito", most closely identified with their problems, and help pay interest at the beginning of his family, ends up becoming an honest solidarity.

I highlight two interesting scenes, a very funny, when (Carlo Delle Piane), "Espósito's son" read the writing he does at school about his dad, and talk with "Bottoni" and "Esposito"in the portal, it is the key scene that sums up the feelings of the two protagonists.

The film has a successful screenplay and great performances, with the famous Toto, and Aldo Fabrizi. Monicelli's hand is felt in the opening sequence, very witty and well told, and masterfully finished with a family meal.

Lancaster is terrific as a honorable and tough cowboy

The movie concerns about a baron cattle ( Ray Collins ) who takes a foreman named Owen ( Burt Lancaster ) as his own son , originating in the legitimate named Lee ( Rober Walker ) an enormous resentment for the adopted brother . An illegitimate child of Lee and Lily ( Sally Forrest ) creates more problems when the brothers ( John Ireland , Hugh O'Brian ) from her , along with a mean gunslinger ( Ted De Corsia ) are looking for revenge . Lee married to Jean ( Joanne Dru ) is seeing an opportunity to obtain his father's cattle.

The movie is a good western with extraordinary landscapes that were shot on location in natural parks of Montana and Arizona territory . The picture has action western , drama , round-up , horseman pursuits and is quite entertaining. It's the first Burt Lancaster's Western and as always , he plays a honest and upright character , similarly he played in ¨Unforgiven¨ ( John Huston ). Robert Walker is fine in his last film because being early deceased at thirty two years old , he's specially known by ¨ Strangers on the train ¨ ( Alfred Hitchcock ). George Folsey's cinematography is glimmer and colorful as is reflected on the breathtaking and spellbound outdoors , however the photography is a little worn-out. Art direction by Cedric Gibbons , he's the greatest production designer by the time and of Metro Goldwyn Mayer ( film producer ). The movie attained lukewarm reception by the public , achieved a moderated success , however a similar film titled ¨ Red River ¨ ( Howard Hawks ), also with the same protagonist , the attractive Joanne Dru , was much better as reviews as box office . The motion picture will appeal to Burt Lancaster fans and western genre enthusiasts.

The Nightclub in Submarine Command was the Club Royal

The nightclub pictured in Submarine Command was the Club Royal located at 3rd and C street in downtown San Diego. The wallpaper was black with chartreuse horses pictured, the booths were red. Walter Fuller was the band leader and played trumpet. This nightclub was owned at the time by Albert Bertolino who appears briefly in the bar scene. His wife,Una was the attractive blond seated at the bar. William Holden and Nancy Olsen were on the set at the time and were kind enough to visit with me and my family during the filming of this scene at a restaurant next door to the club. Third street at that time consisted of one bar after another. These clubs were razed in the latter part of the 20th century.

forgotten, but a model for any film about dangerous sports.

The Bullfighter and the Lady is a great film that is forgotten. One of the reasons I think is the name of the film, which makes you think of a Walt Disney cartoon. In the fifties you would hear about John Ford or Hitchcock or Hawks being great directors but no one would mention Budd Boetticher and as time is the greatest critic, we can now appreciate how good he was. This is a semi- autobiographical film since Budd was a bullfighter before becoming involved in movies. His first job in Hollywood was as technical adviser for the bullfighting scenes in "Blood and Sand". Robert Stack is an American who becomes friendly with a great matador Gilbert Roland. Stack teaches Roland how to shoot birds and Roland teaches him to bullfight. Stack also falls in love with a woman from Roland's group (Joy Page). Katy Jurado is Roland's wife. As the story flows we see great scenes of bullfighting. Even though I have seen a couple of bullfights in Mexico, I learned much more from seeing this film. The Bullfighter and the Lady should be a model for any film about a dangerous sport. As the film was produced by John Wayne, John Ford (Wayne's great friend) cut about 30 minutes. He told Budd that the reason for this was that the studio would not release the film if it would be any longer. Budd forgave him, but he had the great pleasure of seeing his film restored to the original version before he died. That is how it is shown nowadays

Great movie to watch when you're having a crappy day

I was having just about the worst day of my life. Then I stumbled on this cute film, watched it, and now I'm ready to go out & kiss a streetlamp.

I have to admit, I only watched it for 2 reasons: VERA-ELLEN'S LEGS. But it's really so much more. The plot is actually quite clever and creatively woven. It's almost like a Shakespearean comedy with all of its delightful misunderstandings. And of course there's also... VERA-ELLEN'S LEGS.

The only unfortunate aspect of this film is that the version I purchased (the "100 Family Classics" collection by Mill Creek Entertainment) doesn't have the best video quality, and I've heard the same about the Alpha release. The brightness and contrast are a bit too high, so a lot of the scenes seem bleached out especially when Vera is dancing in a white dress. But I suppose you can fiddle with the controls of your TV set to compensate. I can only imagine how it looked on the big screen back in '51. The stage sets, costumes & colours are otherwise dazzling & delightfully creepy--sort of in a "Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" vein.

As far as the romance goes, this is just perfect. Not sappy, not contrived, not melodramatic. Just 100% ahhhhhh. Too bad, you poor schmucks, your miserable lives will never be as charming as this. Har har har. Wait, what am I laughing at? My life sucks just as bad as yours. Oh hell. Time to watch this movie again.

Wonderful Franklie Laine Musical

During 1951 to 1955 Jonie Taps made wonderful light hearted musicals for Columbia Pictures. They all had familiar songs and you always felt good when leaving the theatre. Frankie Laine was always the lead and this time he had Terry Moore of "Come Back Little Sheba" and tall Jerome Cowan singing and the love interest. This film was about the radio/television industry with early color television. I just saw this cute musical and it brought a smile to my face. I wish Columbia would release these Frankie Laine/Jonie Tap musicals. Others in the musical series are "Rainbow Round My Shoulder," "Bring Your Smile Along," and "He Laughed Last."

This is par excellence the kind of film which it's trendy to put disparagement on.This is par excellence the kind of film the new wavelet buffs laugh at .This is par excellence the kind of movie the educated clever people,those who know Rivette,Godard and Rohmer by heart, love to put down.(with notable exceptions of course).

Jean-Paul Le Chanois was a generous director whose humanism ,philanthropism and social concerns cannot be called into question."Sans Laisser d'Adresse" is just that: love for the human being,sympathy for the feeble.Once I wrote a comment on another Le Chanois's film "le Cas Du Docteur Laurent" .I got disastrous feedback.

Bernard Blier -as good as ever- portrays a taxi driver whose passenger, Thérèse (a moving Daniele Delorme) is looking for mister Forrestier.However this man seems nowhere to be found;so Le Chanois takes us on a tour in Paris,from an union meeting to a dentist's office ,from a paper (office) to a club in Saint-Germain-des-Prés where a young Juliette Gréco sings "la Fiancée du Prestidigitateur" (the conjurer's fiancée).And after a while we realize the man the girl's looking for is none other than a married lady killer and that she's a baby with her ,a baby whose father....

This is popular nay populist cinema in the noblest sense of the term.The screenplay involves many many characters (as Le Chanois' s previous work "Agence Matrimoniale" did),and it's a wonder one remembers most of them after the screening for most of them's appearance does not exceed three or four minutes.

Some say the Nouvelle Vague changed all this "obsolete" art.But Julien Duvivier had already trampled his generation's principles underfoot : in "Sous le Ciel de Paris" ,the year before,he had destroyed the young-girl-coming-from-the-Provinces cliché ;and with his 1952 masterpiece "la Fete à Henriette" ,he would definitively call into question what the highbrows called the "Cinema de Papa".

That said,I watched "Sans Laisser d'Adresse" with a great pleasure.

This is the kind of movie the so-called connoisseurs of the French cinema would not even think of seeing.Don't be like them!

Yes

Despite the distinction of being Grace Kelly's first film, (and she is quite good here), this film holds up with the best of the genre. It's one of those films that is incidentally seen by the casual channel surfer and, given five minutes, impossible to turn away from. This film is amazingly innovative in its premise and relies on character, (New York being as important as any other), and story to set the flow and tempo. There are deliciously cunning and unique character moments throughout a film that is, at the same time, full of contrivance and stereotypical sorts. (Do we really need to see another Irish-american policeman being negligent in his duties?). Yet, somehow all the parts equal a very solid whole and a very tense, sharply focussed and surprising film.

If you see this one on late-night tv as you flick through with your remote, be sure to stop and take a look. This one is a definite "yes".

Heart-warming honesty and sweet romance mark this film.

I watched this movie and was transported, both in transports of delight, and mentally transported back to Sweden, where I had a brief but intense love-affair.

The scenes with the two young lovers, meeting and playing on the lake, with the little boat, with the dog, "Squabble", picking berries, were so finely drawn on screen, they could have been transcribed from my memories...

Cinema can be magic, and cinema like this can make one's life more wonder-filled.

Quirky Little Civil War Film

I had a really hard time figuring out whether to give this a 5 or a 6. The film has a few things going for it but on the other hand it has some definite problems. I finally settled on a 6. I gave it a point for quirkiness.

The casting of James Craig was obviously intended to evoke Clark Gable and Rhett Butler. Too obviously. Craig's vocal performance seemed to indicate that he also wanted to play up the Clark Gable angle. It was a bit distracting during the love scenes but he seemed to, thankfully, drift away from it during the action sequences.

Guy Madison was cast because he was easy to look at. But his performance was anything but easy to look at. His character gyrated wildly from manic damnyankee enemy to soft hearted friend of the family. I couldn't tell if he was possessed or just in serious need of some mood stabilizing drugs.

I never developed an empathy with the leading male and female characters. Every time they passionately kissed I kept thinking about her poor naive husband off surrounded by Sherman's Army while she played footsie with his alleged old best West Point friend.

The special effects were very interesting and quite well done. But its hard to imagine that anybody ever grew any cotton in the rocky scrub that looked remarkably like Southern California during wildfire season. If you are going to spend the special effects money to matte in a giant plantation house you can at least matte it into a rich green landscape rather than a rocky gulch.

I won't even mention (well actually I will) the fact that the main geographical feature of the movie is a hollowed out, honeycombed, Devil's Tower from Close Encounters. Only this one is smack dab in the middle of Georgia! The makers of this movie would have had better luck just using the real Stone Mountain and pretended it was hollow. I kept expecting the mother ship to hover over the mountain.

The explosive ending seemed to be the result of the writer suddenly realizing that he had to finish his script in the next two sentences. I can't say I've seen a film that only needs 2 seconds to wrap everything up and turn off the lights.

But there are a few good things that made this movie appealing. Your generic Civil War movie has a smashing good Cavalry charge in it and lots of dashing guys on horses waving swords and flags. You know they do. This film went WAY off the beaten path. The heroes of this film are the artillery.....yes....you heard it right.....the heroes are exclusively the Confederate Artillery. That deserves a rating point right there. They even got the Confederate artillery uniform colors right. Its not often you see a Civil War film where the difference between a Dahlgren gun and a Brooke's Rifle is essential to the plot. The artillery battles were handled quite skillfully.

This is essentially a fifties matinee action picture. But the makers did manage to insert a couple of quite beautiful moments into the film. For a moment, a hard-hearted, oppressive, damnyankee skulker becomes human when he presents a photograph of his two babies and thinks wistfully of his family and his farm. More than one character mentions that he didn't start the war, that he was just playing the role assigned to him on the great stage. A few quiet moments about the war's real meaning and effect in this odd little shoot 'em up.
