Melodramatic Japanese Soap-Opera

Mogy blackmails Satomi's sister Hinako, asking her to marry him and he would not send Masago to jail, and Satomi wrongly understands that Hinako is dating her enemy Mogy. I saw this movie in a Brazilian cable television expecting to see another great Japanese classic. I was absolutely wrong: "Bara Gessen" is nothing but a melodramatic Japanese soap-opera, full of scandals, shallow romances and situations. The confused plot begins with many characters without previous development, and is full of ellipsis and insinuations, being sometimes very difficult to follow and understand. I found interesting the story be supported by women, one of them very powerful, as lead characters. My vote is four.

Romantic movie

This is great romantic movie, with unforgettable Mexican music. The brief plot: the movie is about two men in Mexican revolution, one being a high military officer and another, being sentenced for capital punishment. The mother of one of them come to see the prisoner, but she was not told that these guys, previously close friends, are now adversaries. The movie has nice cinematography, was done in great BW, and was extremely popular in Yugoslavia in fifties. My mother used to watch the movie three times and cried each time, I watched that movie in the cinema on June 17th, 1986 and cried too. A copy of the movie has been preserved in the "La Cinémathèque de Yougoslavie" and I mention this because I've heard that the original negative has been lost, so somebody from Mexico might be interested in preserving this gem...

Sidetracked

This is a Public Service picture thinly disguised as a crime movie, and a very poor one too. You know you're in trouble when three, count 'em three governors get to pound the message home that Crime Does Not Pay. Except in politics, i guess.Man, those HUAC hearings must have really scared Jack Warner silly to produce such lame law and order tripe as this movie. It's clear from the get-go that these gangsters are basically two-bit crooks, cowards who hit women and on a one way trip to the death house. Movies like this are only of interest as a scary example of Fifties government propaganda. "Kids, these guys may look cool, but look how mean and stupid they are. I'm sure you'd all much rather be a stuffed shirt like the clever cops who are way smarter than those no-good goons. Now eat your greens and go do your homework!" I'm sure J. Edgar "What's the Mafia?" Hoover gave this his Seal of Approval. Forgettable and frightening Fifties fare.

Review :

Above average "revenge" western

A good cast and story with tight direction lift this oater above the average. Morris is the young boy, grown, searching for the murderer of his father, while travelling with a variety show. Hale is great as the baddie, and a very young Albright is, as always, easy on the eyes. This is one of the few pictures Morris received top billing in following his return from WWII, and he also produced. Of course the ending is predictable, but it's fun getting there.

Funny Hope-Hedy comedy

I read somewhere here in this forum a readers take on the Bob-Hedy friction. Let me settle this once and for all. Hedy was always Bob favorite...look at some of the old war newsreels with the stars getting involved in the war, in their own way. There's a clip where Bob is surprisingly sharing a bed with his crony, Bing Crosby and in his dreams, he keeps calling out for Hedy. Hedy was an MGM player, so odds were against them making a movie together, each under contract to different studios. It turned out that some of Hedy's best funny scenes were cut, because the studio head at Paramount, didn't want anyone to be more funnier than their bread and butter comedian. She resented it, after all she was in the midst of making a comeback, as they called it in those days, after her terrific success in Samson and Delilah for that same studio a year before. Its odd that in 1951, Bob and Hedy made a comedy radio stint on top of a U.S.Navy flattop, in front of the sailors, in San Diego port. They even made jokes about appearing together in that movie. So, if there was friction, it was short lived. As far as her role, she was suppose to be playing it straight to Bob's antics. To me,the funniest scenes involved Hedy, mainly because I was surprised at how well she did handle comedy. Her hitting Bob like a wildcat, after he 'punched' her. Her double take upon seeing "both" Bob's was priceless...and that ending, with her driving the fire truck.

Story of a guilt

This is the one and only movie directed by the catalonian Lorenzo Llobet Gracia. The plot is about the absolutely demential story of Carlos, a fervent cinema lover whose mind is seriously affected by a complex of guilt: while he is out filming the street riots during the 18 th of July (the beginnig of the Spanish Civil War) his wife is killed by the republicans (that means the comunists). The remorse only goes away when some years later Carlos watch "Rebecca" by Alfred Hitchcock, and becoming a new regenerated man, he decides to become a cinema director.
