Forgotten Ginger Rogers/Dennis Morgan film deserves a look...

Ginger Rogers didn't have too much luck in her choice of material by the time the late '40s rolled around--except for a reunion with Fred Astaire in 'The Barkleys of Broadway' most of her dramatic films were a disappointment--but 'Perfect Strangers' has a well-written script from a play by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. The two stars play jurors who find themselves on a jury panel for a murder trial. Sequestered, they fall in love despite the fact that Dennis Morgan is married, unhappily. The suspense comes from wondering what will happen to their relationship when the trial ends.

Ginger had wanted to work with Dennis Morgan since their last teaming in 'Kitty Foyle'. Under Bretaigne Windust's sensitive direction, the two stars give interesting performances. Among the supporting roles, Thelma Ritter delivers her usual competent work. Well worth viewing, but not yet released to video. You'll have to catch it on one of the cable stations.

Drummer Noir

There are things we can learn from the movies. Like in this movie we learn that if you have a girlfriend, it's probably not a good idea to introduce her to your mob buddy because he'll only steal her away from you. Besides the educational value of "The Strip", it is a true classic if only for all the drum solos it contains. I'm a big advocate of movies having lots of drum solos and Mickey Rooney's drumming is really showcased here. He's very good, and although the film suggests a downer noirish ending, ultimately Mickey's character "Stan" apparently gets to play in Louis Armstrong's band indefinitely, which strikes me as a great gig. It was fun to see William Demarest sit behind the drum kit too. Without the music interludes the story could have been told in about ten minutes, so the main reason to watch "The Strip" is for the music and dance numbers.

What a gorgeous film!

I saw this film when it first came out and was overwhelmed by the music (by Jacques Offenbach) and the gorgeous 3-strip Technicolor. I even bought the LP soundtrack album (twice). When the Criterion laserdisc version came out, I forked out beaucoup bucks for it -- and was not disappointed! I suspect this film was the first music video, for all the sound (singing and music) was pre-recorded, which gave it a more pure quality. Nearly all the on-camera players were ballet stars, who lip-synced singing by opera stars! It is an opera, after all, so perhaps it could be accused of being a bit stagey, but so what!! It is a pure delight, and I am now happy to report that Criterion has released the DVD! It has been restored and digitally remastered for a truly glorious presentation. Comments by Martin Scorcese only add to the release!

Cheerful Musical, and Oh Whatta Voice!

First of all, Ezio Pinza had a voice. If you've never heard an opera, you'll still respond to this man's singing.

Pinza had a lyric bass unlike anyone alive today, and it's the kind of sound that makes women sit up and take notice - it's an animal communication that has nothing to do with high culture.

Secondly, he's enjoying himself here. Like another refugee from the Metropolitan, tenor Lauritz Melchior, Pinza seems to enjoy acting in MGM escapist froth. His reactions while listening to a bad soprano are worth the price of admission right there.

The script is formulaic, the plot twists and turns visible a mile ahead of time, the overacting of the Italian characters very much of its era.

But they're all having a good time, and you'll have a good time too. "Mr. Imperium" is equally amiable, and features more great singing.

Disregard any negative reviews you may find here: you don't watch MGM musicals expecting "Anna Christie." This film knows exactly what it's doing, and it does just fine.

OK Autry western

Songs blend pretty well. Buttram bumbles amusingly. Marshall Gene helps old friend Smokey establish worthiness of natural-cement-deposit on inheirited land. This doesn't sit well with Sam Brady, who's freight company transports crushed stone to earthen dam being built by local cattlemen. Also in mix is lady Sheriff Carol, who's in cahoots with Brady; and banker Clayton Hodges, who's loan to Brady is too big. An average effort of it's kind.

Tough Enough

A Completely Forgotten Little Film that is quite Good and quite Different. A Number of Film-Noirs took on the PTSD of Returning WWII Veterans and most of them are Well Known and most of them are Fine Films. This one is Unique in that it is Virtually Unknown.

It has a Very Strange Feel to it and is a Serious and Surreal, at Times, Study that is more than Competently Directed and Acted. The Children are Central to the Plot and the Little Ones are Refreshingly Restrained from Stereotype.

Some of the Dialog is Succinct and Stringent. After a Tense Set-Up the Mentally Disturbed Ralph Meeker, at His Best, Confronts the Parents about the Kids and Tersely Taunts..."What did you think I'd do, chop them up into little pieces and put them in a suitcase?"

Tough Stuff for the Era and Reflects the Tone of the Movie. It is a Suspenseful and Fittingly Bizarre Film that Deserves more Attention.
