Review :

Zorro, zorrillo and "zorrillo" do not mean the same thing.

Zorro as you know means fox and Zorrillo means skunk, but also "zorrillo" may mean "dumb fox" or just dumb. This is a great Tin Tan classic and nothing but pure fun for all. Made after the success of "The mark of Zorro" with Tyrone Power some years earlier, but since this is Tin Tan, don't expect the story of Zorro. Actually it's a satire on Hollywood, with a mixture of "Zorro", "Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and with a touch of "Robin Hood" and even "Laurel and Hardy". With a great cast that includes a beautiful young Silvia Pinal and at least two Tin Tans. I wonder if you can spot his real brother "Don Ramon". I'm looking forward a digitally restored DVD copy of this, and the many other good old Mexican films of this period, that just must be restored before is too late.

Based on the 1947 book I.G. Farben, by American author Richard Sasuly, and records from the Nuremberg Trial of the chemical giant I.G. Farben, Council of the Gods is a story about the collaboration between international corporations and Nazi scientists, whose research contributed to the death of millions. Featuring music by Hanns Eisler, electronic sound by Oskar Sala (Hitchcocks's The Birds) and a script by Friedrich Wolf, the film is powerful in its depiction of the moral dilemmas and lessons of the war, as well as of Cold War propaganda. The chemist Dr. Hans Scholz lives through a tortuous political transformation and maturation process. Finally, he becomes wrapped up in his political neutrality and closes his eyes to the fact that poison is being produced in his factory. Standing before the judges at the Nuremberg trials he has to face the fact that he was partly responsible for the deaths of millions in the gas chambers of the concentration camps.

Review :

Effective propaganda but the source of the film makes me wonder how accurate this all is.

"Der Rat der Götter" ("Council of the Gods") is based, at least in part, on the book "I.G. Farben" by American author, Richard Sasuly--who based it on testimony during the Nuremberg trials. However, considering that the film was a joint Soviet and East German effort, I wonder how closely the film sticks to the facts--especially since the focus of the film is often on the evils of corporations and the goodness of labor unions and the communist party in Germany. Obviously the West Germans and Americans weren't interested in making such a film, as the Cold War was in full swing. And, obviously the Soviets and East Germans wanted to make the capitalist systems look bad. So what is the real truth here? I have no idea--but it does make for a compelling film--whether or not it's accurate or if the facts have been twisted to make the anti-capitalist point. One example of such manipulation was as showing actual footage of a chance explosion at the BASF plant and saying it was of the Farben plant--which did not explode. The next ten minutes was a diatribe against capitalism--and a relatively shallow one at that. Also, the film saying the company in question was pro-Hitler was unfair because they actually contributed to MANY political groups--not just the Nazis. Still, considering the East Germans based this on finding of American investigators makes me think the basic plot is accurate.

I noticed that one reviewer felt the film was dull. I didn't find it that dull but could understand their sentiments. It's a film that is rather talky much of the time and most of the action consists of just a few pieces of stock footage from WWII scattered here and there. However, I found the movie fascinating because anti-Western propaganda films are rarely seen in the US and it was a rare glimpse into the Soviet Bloc world. Plus, the film did have a compelling message about internationalists and corporations profiting from and loving war. Sure, it twisted a few facts here and there--but it did heighten the suspense and added to the impact. And it did get its message across well.

By the way, there is a short documentary in which the film maker talks about the film. He stands by the accuracy of the film overall but admits some 'artistic license' was used as well.

Review :

How to do a religious film without mentioning God.

How does one write about religion without hardly even mentioning God? This masterpiece shows better than any other film that religion is not about God, but about us. Religion is a box into which we try to put God. As Voltaire said or wrote, "God has created us into His image , but we have returned the compliment." I am a deeply religious man, yet I have not set foot in a church for the past 30 years or so, except for marriages, baptisms, funerals and the like. In that sense, this is a deeply religious film. However, it is about religiosity, not strictly about religion. It is about the wife who will speak about the sins of her husband for an hour during confession, and where the priest has to interrupt her and tell her "Now that I have heard the confession of your husband, may I hear your own?" How such a movie could have been made by an avowed atheist is beyond me. In that sense, I feel a deep kinship with Robert Bresson and with the writer, Georges Bernanos. In short, this is a blue-blood MASTERPIECE !!! Buy it, steal it, rent it, lie for it, but see it, please !

Michiyo moved to Osaka two years ago, when her husband Hatsunosuke who works at a stock brokerage was transfered from Tokyo. She wash, cook and clean 365 days a year. All the dreams and hopes she had when they got married five years ago seems to be gone. From here on we follow the everyday life of Mr. and Mrs. Okamoto.

Interesting but unsubbed...

Unsubbed, so I cannot really review it properly. Setsuko Hara is radiant though quite bland as the housewife who gets fed up with her husbands deroutes, especially regarding his (rather innocent) adventures with a young niece. She moves back with her relatives, but once hubby shows up in a more humble state, all is forgiven. I don't think much else actually happened, but the film is given to describing the everyday tasks and problems rather than great melodrama. Although Ozu is hailed as the great Japanese director for the Japanese, it seems to me that Naruse's film are more effortlessly showing the natural life of Mr. and Mrs. Japan, while Ozu's often come across as more staged tableaux. This is likely because of the invariably fixed and central camera Ozu employs, which makes the room in which a scene takes place appear as a stage and the action strictly choreographed. Compared with Ozu Naruse's camera is quite more engaged, however subtle the movements and variations may be, and he makes more frequent use of semi-close ups and reaction shots.

Review :

Confusion Rather Than Confucius Reigns

"Peking Express" is not so much a direct remake of "Shanghai Express" as a reworking of the same theme updated to the Chinese Communist era. Just about every Hollywood based, Chinese actor makes an appearance. In particular Benson Fong plays a prominent role. In real life he was a gourmet and ran a Beverly Hills restaurant so the cast and crew probably ate well during the shoot! Corinne Calvert invites unfavourable comparisons with Marlene Dietrich in the original. Calvert is more like a slut than a courtesan. She used to whinge that none of her Hollywood films showed off her formidable acting talent. (Your secret is safe with us, love!)Joseph Cotten's role is not the same as Clive Brooks's in the original. Cotten is fine in the scenes involving arguments, thought and romance, but unconvincing when mowing down bandits with a machine gun. Since he plays a doctor presumably he forgot or ignored his oath when forced into violence. Cotten and Calvert are a mismatch. This would have been a better film if Cotten's role had been split into two and a more virile, physical actor had done the shooting and romanced Calvert relegated to second lead leaving Cotten to debate and romance a more classy actress of the type he had previously appeared with. Much of the ideology discussed is dated and boring. Director William Dieterle to his credit keeps it moving at a reasonable pace, but keeping track of who is on what side leads to confusion. Another source of mystery is the running time. I clocked my print in at 81 minutes. Most of the reference books list 95 minutes, but the Motion Picture Almanac gives 90 which suggests some trimming/ editing went on before general release. This probably improved the film, but not a lot!

Amiable western is Morgans Warner swansong

I despair of seeing many rare vintage films on TCM UK.So i was very surprised to find this entertaining western in a midweek afternoon schedule.Dennis Morgan here becomes the standard singing cowboy. He must have known that the writing was on the wall when Warner's cast him in this film. However that was probably more to do with their desire to cut down their list of contracted actors.Morgan is supported in the comic sidekick role by George O 'Hanlon,of the Joe McDoakes series. There is a lot of action in a routine plot and Dennis takes every opportunity to sing a song. Its no classic but it is well worth a view if TCM ever show it again.

Review :

Paul Henried at Sea, again!!!

Starting with THE Spanish MAIN (RKO/1945) and continuing too the mid 1950s Paul Henried made a series of discount SwashBucklers. LAST OF THE BUCCANEERS is his effort for 1950 from Columbia. Henried plays JEAN LAFITTE a Pirate whose main claim to fame was his participation in the 'Battle of New Orleans' during the 'War of 1812'. This movie purports to show his adventures after that event.

The print of the film is in first class shape and filmed in brilliant TechniColor, this is its sole saving asset. By 1950 the days of glory for Henried (and Bette Davis) at Warner Brothers were long gone. Now middle aged he (and her) were no longer suited for those classic romances, made obsolete post WWII. Henried's accent though was useful and it slated him for these action epics. As long as they were 'B' films with a budget that reflected the same and made money he had a job. Another curious casting was in comedic song and dance man Jack Oakie, like Henried now obsolete, though we could never understand his appeal anyway. Today he is best remembered for playing 'Benzini Napaloni' in THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940). His favorite role for us was when Lloyd Nolan made him eat lead in THE Texas RANGERS (1936) a fate he truly deserved.

LAST OF THE BUCCANEERS is one of those films that if you are channel surfing and nothing else appeals to you is worth a look since it runs only 79 minutes. For real action on the high seas you are better off with Errol Flynn, THE SEA HAWK (1940) or Tyrone Power, THE BLACK SWAN (1942). For JEAN LAFITTE best to tune into THE BUCCANEER (1958). Yul Brynner does a commendable job and it features 'The Battle of New Orleans'.
