Rex in a solid western outing

The Arizona Cowboy rides again in this tale of a Wild West veterinarian on the trail of some pretty cagey criminals. As always, Allen's rich baritone voice is featured in a couple of sagebrush ditties.

Slim Pickens provides the comic relief in an always pleasing performance. As always, the budget, script and songs are high caliber . Rex Allen's voice, demeanor and screen presence make him very believable in the heroic role of a frontier vet. Fans of the action-filled westerns of the early 1950's will enjoy this one. Nicely done!

What a pity that his career began as the B-westerns were coming to the end of the trail ........

TV pilot foisted off as feature fails to fool anybody

Danger Zone is an odd little double-truck of a movie; it tells two entirely independent stories, one after the other, though with three recurring characters. The only plausible explanation is that the stories were pilot episodes of a television series that never got picked up, but were salvaged by packaging as a twofer and farming out as a programmer to theater chains.

A troubleshooter who earns his keep renting boats on the San Francisco waterfront, O'Brian (Hugh Beaumont) picks up spare change by taking on freelance assignments; his usual fee is $50, for which he is usually set up. He shares his nautical digs with an old souse called (of course) The Professor (Edward Brophy), a Runyonesque character with a Thesaurus instead of a voicebox -- he never says "I had the chance" if he can proclaim "The opportunity befell me." Then there's the dim-witted and antagonistic police detective (Richard Travis), always ready to clap the cuffs on Beaumont just before the truth emerges.

Neither of the stories -- the first about a woman who pays Beaumont to bid an exorbitant amount on a locked suitcase that turns out to contain a saxophone, the second about a private detective (Tom Neal, of Detour notoriety) who sets up Beaumont as correspondent, and murderer, in a society divorce case -- gets worked out in any satisfying way. The half-hour allotted to each allows little room for extra characters or unexpected bends in the road (television was to prove that the most successful mystery/detective shows thrived in a hour format). Danger Zone, viewed as early television, is perhaps a tad better than such pioneers as Martin Kane, Private Eye -- at least it's filmed, not done live in studio -- but was nonetheless passed over by the networks in 1951. Beaumont would have to wait six more years, until Leave It To Beaver, to hit his personal jackpot.

Mediterranean Working Vacation

In his second directed film, Richard Brooks filmed his own screenplay and you kind of get the feeling he would like to have had Cary Grant as his lead as he did in his first film, Crisis. I'm betting this film had to have been offered to Grant.

Failing to get Grant, MGM had its leads under contract in Stewart Granger and Pier Angeli. They did a reasonably good job in a caper film where the thief turns out to have a conscience.

Granger contracts to steal a valuable religious painting from a church in Palermo and makes good his escape to Tunis. Where instead of delivering it to fence George Sanders, he uses the old Granger charm to make copies and see if he can collect a few times on this robbery. Since nobody knows quite what Granger's game is, they have to wait and see including the police inspector Joseph Calleia.

The charm is used on young artist Pier Angeli and he even marries the girl. But she in the end has more effect on him than he on her.

MGM brought Richard Brooks and the whole cast over to Sicily and to Tunis with interiors filmed in their Cinecitta studios in Rome. So after going through that expense, why didn't they opt for color, given some of the beautiful locations they were filming at?

For Calleia and Angeli, this was a return home. For the rest of the cast it was a nice Mediterranean working vacation even though Brooks and Granger did not get along. I really do think Brooks must have seen this film for Cary Grant.

It's not a bad film, it does drag in spots and color would have been of immense help. Still Granger is every bit as charming as Cary Grant.

No matter what Richard Brooks thought.

ACQUANETTA, AN ACTRESS FOR THE HISTORY !!!!

A small jewel among the short filmography of the unequal actress Acquanetta, that will charm to all its fans. It is an entertained and quite related history in powerful "supercinecolor" with all the topics of this type of films where the sumptuous scenography is worthy of mention.

In this film we see the beautiful Acquanetta far away of her characteristic wild roles of woman to the ones that was usual in the Universal and shows that was a versatile actress who in the role adequate, she could show that was an exemplary actress.

A great deal has been spoken on some movies that have resisted the step of the time without to have been directed by large names, and this film is one of them. I expect that the time put the things in its place and Acquanetta even to the history as an actress of indelible legend.

I Love Film-Noir!

In my book, all true film-noir films are good in one way or another. There's just something about a post war film-noir thriller and "Roadblock" as as good as any of them. I guess this qualifies as a B-picture, but I refuse to see it that way. What I liked about it was how the femme fatal crosses over from being a gold digging ice princess to actually choosing love over money. She is played by non other than Joan Dixon who went on to appear in only about four other films. Too bad, I thought she was really lovely. Then there's the great Charles McGraw. He's just made for the film-noir genre and just about my favorite noir actor. Here he literally plays good cop/bad cop. I actually caught myself feeling disappointed that he was a good guy who went wrong. For me, it had a great feel. The cinematography was done by Nicholas Musuraca who had one Oscar nod to his credit. A top camera guy is always as big in a noir as any of the on-screen actors. At under 75 minutes it certainly doesn't wear out it's welcome. If you love film noir, then add this one to your list!

BTW, I had recorded "Roadblaock"on DVD and just watched it yet again. Over two years later, my original review still stands. I watch it every time it's on TCM and I love it more and more. Along with Jack Carson, Charles McGraw is one of my very favorite "second tier" actors and "Roadblock" will always be a film that I'l urge others to seek out.

Important Life Lesson Given in Film



Every so often,one can find wisdom in the strangest places.To borrow a phrase from our friends in Alcoholics Anonymous,you get a message from the Higher Power.But,you also have to be aware that the message is being sent,and also have to be able to recognize that message.

It's been over 40 years since I've seen this picture.Consequently,my memories are not terribly clear.I believe that,for the most part, it is a run-of the mill Arabian nights movie. What I do remember,however,is the fact that the wishes granted by the Genie are accompanied by a dire price.The Genie openly states that, he is required to kill whoever casts the third wish in a series.This is,of course,quite different than the benign genies seen in many other films of this nature.

Now,there happens to be a price that we pay for whatever we get.And great gifts are almost always accompanied by great costs.Anything worth getting usually requires extreme effort,competition,and/or a tremendous cost.And the wishes the Genie grants in this film clearly illustrate this point.

Neglected work of a master

Shen Yuan (Yang Shen) tells a man thrown into prison by the Japanese after a lifetime of loyal service to China, "The Chinese people have lived meaninglessly for 5,000 years, dying unmourned…but things are different today". Shen, a revolutionary who has been fighting a guerilla war for many years, is ready to die for his belief that the Communist revolution will end Chinese enslavement to imperialists, foreigners, feudalists, and warlords forever. This Life of Mine, directed by Shi Hui, traces 50 years of Chinese history from the Qing Dynasty to the Communists. Told from the point of view of a simple Beijing policeman, Hui makes it clear that neither the Qing Dynasty, the Nationalists, or the Japanese ever really cared about the people and the injustices did not stop with each regime change.

This Life of Mine begins when Hui is 60 years old and shivering in the cold looking for food and shelter. His life is told in flashbacks beginning with his first job as a policeman, and then following his career through uprisings, takeovers, and revolutions as he defends whatever authority happens to be in power. Hui raises a family only to see them leave either through death, abduction by the authorities, or in the case of his beloved son Hai Fu, join the guerillas. The film is not a dry history lesson but a warm, funny and often very sad portrayal of a human being struggle for survival and dignity. Though at times he seems servile, he is a man of compassion and a loving provider for his family. The scene where he begs his last remaining child, Hai Fu, to stay with him when he asks permission to leave to join the guerillas is truly affecting.

Between 1947 and 1952, director Shi Hui was one of the most popular directors in China. Unfortunately for the world, just five years later, he was labeled a reactionary rightist and took his own life at the age of 42. It was a privilege to have been able to see a work by this master. This Life of Mine needs to be restored and released on DVD.

This is just a comment about another reviewer (pablo1) who obviously did not see the film and could not resist putting a comment. First, Don Quinquin did not imagine that his wife betrayed him as he came upon her in bed with his best friend. Secondly, he chased his wife away WITHOUT their daughter and as she told him that the child was not his (a lie in order to keep the baby), he took the girl away and abandoned her. The mother never saw her again and was never told what became of her. Quinquin did not know that his daughter was ever married until the very last moment and only then did she told him that she was pregnant. I would appreciate if "would be" reviewers made the effort to watch the film, otherwise, why bother ? Thank you.

The Bourvil version

I saw the Bourvil version in English someplace when I was young & have never seen it since. I wonder if its available anywhere on Earth. It was funny and something about it made me remember it to this day. It was not subtitled, because I doubt as a kid I would have bothered watching it. The star "Bourvil" a French guy I have never seen since was a blundering goof-ball, who just stumbled into falling thru walls, into peoples lives & at the end I believe he lost his power. I think there was some kind of romantic involvement as well in the story, but I cant remember any details.I also think it was in the 1950s, as I had to be preteen.If anyone knows where that can be acquired, I'd love to know.

The funniest Tin Tan comedy ever

Since I was a kid, I had enjoyed classic Mexican cinema, especially that of the comedy genre. This movie is, by far, one of the most entertaining black and white films ever made. It is hard to see German Valdez "Tin Tan" involved on such improbable situations as this one, except perhaps, "Simbad el Mareado". Gorgeous girls, clever dialog, silly situations, a perfect casting and musical scenes that complement a very entertaining story make this movie a true jewel of the genre that will keep you laughing from start to finish. This film has the usual gang of great actors: Wolf Ruvinskis, José René Ruiz "Tun Tun", Juan Garcia and Marcelo Chavez, led, of course by Tin Tan in the role of a very mischievous character that puts everyone at trouble with his unwanted comments. It also has its dose of action: there is an incredible scene at the ending, where Tin Tan climbs to the top of the Mexico City Cathedral, that impressed me since I was a kid and saw this movie on TV for the first time. I still wonder if this was performed by him or a double. If you are searching for the perfect Tin Tan movie, this one has to be it.

A right film.

The film appears to show people who felt they knew what right was and who acted in harmony with that inner conviction , right as the bible describes it to be for the school headmaster reads the parable of seed from the bible and otherwise quotes from it, and appears to be a living example of its precepts in his comportment. His reasonableness is most winsome especially in the scene where he rebukes the younger teacher for lack of respect toward the older teachers, notwithstanding the fact that he agrees with the younger teachers argument, he nonetheless criticises the way he presented it. The compelling invisible force that made people believe that they knew the right they felt was....was ..right and the subsequent belief that good would eventually triumph over bad, evil, naughtiness call it what you like, is undeniable in this film, and if Flashman is symbolic of the axis of evil, then maybe expulsion of them is mankinds only hope. Who will do the expelling? Who decides what is right? Evil? I love films that get you thinking!

quite funny, and typically fordian

Nobody can say that this is a masterpiece, because this picture was made by John Ford. And, as everyone knows, John Ford can't make a good comedy... This is all rubbish!! This is a good entertaining fordian reflexion about war, patriotism and life (in the army or in a provincial town). Ford is not an aggressive filmmaker like could have been Sturges (by the way, I love Sturges too, but for different reasons), and his look at his characters is tender, full of compassion and amusement, even if the main subject (war) is not funny, a fact which is here quite explicit. Ford knows the weakness points of his compatriots, but denounces them without anger. He is part of America, and is clever enough to know it and not to take everything too seriously. Any Ford's movie is, in some way or another, a comedy. That's his stuff, and even his most somber dramas are kind of comedies. See the cavalry trilogy, or even "how green...": in every Ford movie a character (most often, several) plays a funny-tender part. That's Ford's universe, with his highlights and his lousy pictures. This one is quite in the middle, so definitely worth watching!!!

A woman's desperation defending her sorrow with her sword.

Anne of the Indies is one of my favourite movies.On my point of view,the central theme is the impossibility for a woman to live her own identity as a woman.She is trapped in a male identity,being grown up under Blackbeard's school: sword,ships and pirates.

When she falls in love for the first time,she is unable to express female feelings she feels.She almost ridiculise herself for her love,a new experience,and her own humiliation is exceptionally well acted by Jean Peters.Her desperation became more evident as the film goes on,above all when she has to admit herself her own sorrow after having been betrayed (this betrayal is a terrible event which destroys her under-construction female identity) and she is forced to admit her own weakness she has always tried to hide with a splendid use of her sword. The final scene with Blackbeard planting his sword on the ship floor is fantastic,because he does just the same act that every person who understand the dramatic situation of Anne-Captain Providence would have done.

I find this a marvellous movie,almost perfect:the only scene I don't like too much is the very last,when the name of her ship is cancelled from the register of outlaw ships:on my point of view,Tourneur made an error to show her again.It would have been more effective if the last time we look at her was just when she cries to Blackbeard "Come and take me,old pirate"(I base myself on the italian dubbing).

An Exellent Ballad

This film is an exciting ballad. Yes, that's right: it is a story plot with the song-track of a ballad. Quite unusual, and having its faults, the defects of one of the unique -- but still interesting -- proprietory colour film processes which came to life briefly in that decade.

Besides the really super ballad-style, the direction of the plot-line and dialogue has a refreshing 'devil may care' attitude, quite contrary to the stultified over-worked techniques not uncommon with high budget studio Westerns.

This Western is one for the genre collector; its pleasing uniqueness makes it so.

one of my all time favorites

I thought this movie was very entertaining. The music alone made it one of my all time favorites. I wish it would be released on DVD. I think that Donald O'Conner and Jimmy Durante played off of each other very well. It always took me back to a simpler time and place to that perfect world we all wished we lived in.If your looking for a movie that takes you to a place that sums up 1950's milk and cookies life style this is it. I seen this movie when I was about twelve and have always tried to watch it when ever it came on. I had the movie taped on VHS for a long time and let it go thinking it would be released on DVD in the near future.If your looking for a family movie that is entertaining and fun this is it.
