A solid , entertaining B-western !

Tim Holt was one of the more accomplished actors to ever appear in the B-westerns. While he was great in films such as Treasure of Sierra Madre & Magnificent Ambersons, he always seemed most at home in the saddle. Pairing him with Chito Martin was pure genius .....they remain my favorite western team. That and a great script make this entertaining .

In this well-written action yarn, Tim and his Mexican-Irish sidekick take on a cattle-rustling scheme. Their honesty, tenacity and detective work help save the day. Richard Martin was especially good in this one, equally adept at action and comedy. Dorothy Malone was good also.

I highly recommend this one. This shows why B-westerns were so popular. Enjoy, Pardners!

Review :

Beloved donkey.

"Never Take No for an Answer" is based on the story "The Small Miracle" by Paul Gallico. The British-Italian co-production was called "Peppino e Violetta" in Italy. It is about an orphan boy named Peppino who lives in Assisi and who seeks permission from the pope to allow his ailing donkey (Violetta) into the crypt of Saint Francis in the hope of curing him. Much less schmaltzy than one would surmise, the film has some genuine pathos. It is certainly not of the same stature, of course, as another donkey film, "Au Hasard Balthasar" by Robert Bresson. This touching story was one of the few films actually allowed to be shot inside the Vatican. Vittorio Manunta is a remarkable trouper and is the same boy who played alongside Paul Muni in Joseph Losey's "Stranger on the Prowl." A remake of this movie is the one that circulated on American TV as "The Small Miracle." It was made in 1973 and featured Vittorio De Sica and Raf Vallone and was directed by Jeannot Szwarc. This IMDb entry is using, incorrectly, the title of that remake and spreading confusion elsewhere on the internet.

I Like It, I Really Like It

I purchased the DVD which contained "Ma and Pa Kettle Go To Town" on deep discount. I have very fond memories of seeing the "Ma and Pa Kettle" movies on Television when I was a child. Of course, the things which make a seven year old laugh and the things which make a 37 year old laugh are often very different. When I watched this movie, though, I was surprised to see that I still found it quite enjoyable. In particular, I was quite impressed at Percy Kilbride's comic skills as Pa Kettle. He had a wonderful deadpan delivery. Marjorie Main gives the same robust performance which she brought to almost all her roles as a character actress, and, as always, it is fun.

In general, don't look at this film for great plot, or production values, but its got wonderful comic acting, and some genuine laughs.

When a young woman of beauty and talent joins a provincial vaudeville troupe, they're suddenly playing to packed houses, and their aging comic Checco Dalmonte gets big ideas. He falls in love with the ingenue, Liliana, and ignores his companion of several years, Melina Amour. (She wants to marry Checco and she's saving to open a deli.) Also, believing he can be an impresario, he hires other actors and begins rehearsal for a revue that will star Liliana and himself. Liliana admires Checco, but she's being squired around town by Adelmo Conti, the assistant to the region's biggest impresario. Can Checco's new troupe hold onto Liliana, and how will Melina fare?

Review :

Early Fellini

A young woman pursuing her dream of being on the stage, aligns herself with a traveling variety show band of performers in `Variety Lights,' directed by Federico Fellini (and assisted by Alberto Lattuada). Veteran comic actor Checco Dal Monte (Peppino De Filippo) and his troupe of performers are struggling to get by, living from hand to mouth and show to show, but it doesn't deter Liliana Antonelli (Carla Del Poggio), blinded perhaps by the stars in her eyes, from approaching Checco about joining his show. He turns her down-- they simply have no openings, and certainly no money-- but circumstances soon prevail on her behalf, and much to the chagrin of many of the other performers, she joins the troupe. The effect she will have on the show, and how it will influence her own life, remains to be seen at this point; but with Fellini at the helm, you know it's going to be an interesting ride. And it is.

Fellini, a true visionary, is known for filling the screen with vivid images born of his own imagination, especially in his later films. But beyond the sometimes bizarre appearances, there is always an engaging story to be found at the heart of his films, and this one (his first) is no exception. And, though devoid of the surrealism he would use later on, in Checco's company there is something of the carnival motif present that Fellini would return to time and again during the course of his career, and of course, there's the story, presented with that unique Fellini touch and laced with his insight into the human condition, which at it's core is the real strength of the film.

No matter what the subject matter, Fellini always had his finger on the emotional pulse of the material and had the innate ability to transfer what he felt to the screen. Very simply, he knew what worked and how to use it; within the images he presents, there can always be found a reflection of reality-- even amid the surreal-- and it's in his characters. Physically and emotionally, these are real people who run the entire gamut of human existence. Beyond his astounding visuals, it's his ability to cultivate that depth of his characters that makes Fellini special; the way they interact with, and relate to one another or the situations in which they find themselves. And by drawing out his actors, he always gives his audience someone with whom to identify on one level or another.

As Checco, Filippo successfully taps into the humanity of the character, this aging performer with hopes and aspirations beyond his means or capabilities. He's a character with whom you can sympathize, but only to a point-- for you soon recognize his flaws and transgressions. But even then, you are still able to at least understand him. Most importantly, his performance is believable, and his Checco comes across as a very real person.

Del Poggio gives a notable performance as well, as this young woman who makes the most of the opportunity with which she is presented. And as the story unfolds she develops her character extremely well; by the end of the film you know exactly who `Lily' is and what motivates her.

In a memorable supporting role, it's the young Giulietta Masina, however, who steals the show as Melina Amour, Checco's girlfriend. She creates the one character in the film with whom you can truly empathize, and she does it with style. Masina has such a radiant, charismatic screen presence, that whenever she appears the eye is instinctively drawn to her. A gifted actress, she is exceptionally adept at expressing her emotions-- often by merely shifting her eyes-- and communicating with the audience. Few actors can say more or convey as much with their eyes or with a simple expression as Masina. And, sparse as it is, her performance here is alone worth the price of admission.

The supporting cast includes Folco Lulli (Adelmo), John Kitzmiller (Johnny), Dante Maggio (Remo), Carlo Romano (Enzo) and Gina Mascetti (Valeria del Sole). Well crafted and delivered, `Variety Lights' is an engaging story, told in the same straightforward manner Fellini would later use in `La Strada' and `Nights of Cabiria.' The basic elements of the story may be familiar, but it's an entertaining film, and worth seeing, as it prophesies the triumphs of an artist who would soon be recognized as one of the world's master filmmakers: Fellini. I rate this one 7/10.

Review :

Sacha Guitry: 3/10, Michel Simon: 10/10

Sacha Guitry is not a movie director, let alone a screenwriter. Guitry claims so in the opening credits sequence: "I daresay this is stage play." As for me this kind of heavy-handed foreword is out of place in a movie. "L'auteur, bien entendu" shows off and introduce us to the whole cast starting with a grand praise of Michel Simon. The monologue is good but Guitry is insufferably pedantic while we're supposed to get in the movie. Yet I admit this clunky device worked for Le Roman d'un tricheur, but only because 1/Guitry was the lead 2/he played a lifelong cheat and 3/he told us his life in a series of flashbacks.

Now La Poison would have been really poor indeed were it not for Michel Simon's talent. Once Sacha Guitry lets the movie start it rolls up pretty good. The satirical tone tends to be heavy but with Michel Simon playing at times borderline dramatic that sets a good balance... until the movie gets clunky again. Michel Simon has a very good scene with his presumptive lawyer followed by an awfully serious one involving the lawyer and the visiting general attorney. There you can see that the movie needs Michel Simon as a driving force (and Germaine Reuver as the main resulting force of course) : that's a very low and overstretched point made just before the climax. The Climax: Guitry shoots it quite on the nose but the scene is so meaningful it doesn't require much more.

The problem is after the climax the movie has nowhere to go. The satirical tone? It was good enough for the setup but it keeps playing like it's a light comedy (I'm sorry but satirical tone + murder doesn't necessarily make a dark comedy). So the people from the village keep playing the regular types they were assigned to and the trial is totally farcical. There you can only regret that the lawyer's part had been so blatantly undersized. As for Michel Simon if you let him become too strong a character he will overshadow everyone in the scene. And that's what happens: from the climax down to its end La Poison errs and cannot make up for Guitry's poor cinematographic vision.

Interesting Psychological Drama

This interesting psychological drama has a number of strengths that more than make up for the low-budget look and a few minor flaws. The story is full of tension and dramatic possibilities, and things are built up nicely, with the flashback opening and a number of the plot elements frequently reminding you of "Rebecca". It's not really on a par with that story, or with the Hitchcock film version, but it has the same kind of psychology-driven story that takes some skill to tell.

Robert Young plays a talented architect whose life and mental stability have been troubled by a recent tragedy. Young is well cast, since in his earlier years he came across well as this kind of character, who is likable but whose behavior raises a lot of questions. Betsy Drake was an interesting choice for the female lead, emphasizing sincerity, intelligence, and loyalty rather than the glamour and mystery that often characterize noir heroines. Florence Bates also works well as the aunt of Drake's character, though it would have been nice to see the script give her more to work with.

The past and present are tied together in an interesting and unpredictable plot. A more carefully scripted climactic sequence, bringing everything out in a more deliberate manner, would have topped it off even better. But even so, it remains among the better B-movies of its genre, and it makes for an hour and a half of good drama.

Up Front

To me the movie Up Front was one of the three best movies ever filmed. It is the only true movie I have seen about a real combat soldier and what they have to endure. It is too bad this movie is not recorded for sale on a DVD or VHS so our children and adults can see what a Real Soldier is and not some Hollywood Actor like we see portrayed in all the other War movies I have seen. Please record this movie so we can enjoy it once again. I have looked for a copy of it for 50 years or more and would pay dearly for one. I served 22 years in the United States Air Force and am 100% disabled because of this service. I do have the book but the movie is better. Any information concerning if and where I could purchase a copy of this movie would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help and information. GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF America AND THE WHOLE WORLD. I have tried several times to get the word America in capital letters but do not seem to be able to. If you post this please be sure the word America is in capitals.

Jim, Jim, Jim of the Jungle

More of the same for Jungle Jim fans here as Johnny Weissmuller's jungle hero gets involved in helping Anne Lawrence (Sheila Ryan) in the search for a missing football star. The backdrop is one of dastardly doings by some nefarious character, who is instigating raids on villages led by the Skeleton Men. Cue Jim involved in a good quota of close call dramatics.

There's the usual cheap moments; bad rear projection, giant prop boulders that move when someone touches them, but these are the kind of things we tend to afford affection for these days. From drowning perils to big lizard, to fisticuffs and sexual tensions, Jungle Manhunt, without reaching the higher end of the franchise, never falters in its prime objective to entertain without pretension. 6/10

You must watch just enough to hear Tony!!

Early in the movie whilst the lovely Piper is in his arms, Tony gracefully utters- "Yonder lies da castle of my fadder da King." Cut him a little slack! At that time he was VERY new to the movies! What better example could there be of starting out 'shaky' and then becoming a film legend? At least in 'Spartacus', when Olivier told Tony that he preferred "Both oysters AND clams", Tony disappeared without a trace, and Olivier just smiled.

Love is giving, even in such a fallen world!

While this film created a furor upon release, not only for its frank treatment of social and sexual mores in Germany during and after WWII, but also for a modest nude scene, it may seem tame today. Nonetheless, there is a vibrancy here that prefigures Fassbinder and an interesting approach to narrative, voice over, montage and framing that is very modern and adds quite a lot to what is basically a conventional tear jerker that adheres to somewhat traditional Sturm und Drang/Romantic conventions. Well worth the effort to see.

I am a little bit reluctant using such adjectives like "greatest". But when an "oeuvre d'art" deserves it, why not?

In this film all is fine tuned, well gauged, perfectly synchronized.

I shall in particular emphasize the unforgettable José Ferrer's play of Cyrano's fathomless sorrow.

If Hollywood could remember that there was a long time ago, in a far away galaxy, that thing named "The American Cinema"...

Lawrence Tierney at his toughest in underrated film noir

This is a very underrated B film noir, with Lawrence Tierney at his toughest. If you liked Tierney in Born to Kill, you'll like him here as well. The plot is a common one, but rarely will you see such a vicious character in a 1951 film. There's even a real "dirty word" used in this film (by 1950s standards): "pregnant"! Tierney's performance is not to be missed. He plays a character here with no redeeming qualities (unless you call using his mother a "redeeming" quality), & no remorse. The details of his character's development are fairly well explained; enough of his background is given to understand why he turned out the way he did. For film noir fans, you'll like the darkness of the film, shadows abound, & there's a short narration at the beginning. Lisa Golm (who plays Tierney's mother) also gives an outstanding performance (a little too dramatic at times, but I know quite a few people who act like that in real life); the fact that she strongly reminds me of my grandmother (& was coincidentally born only 9 days after my grandmother) helped me to enjoy this film even more. The most thought provoking aspect of the film is the question of how two brothers who were raised together could grow up to be so different. Tierney's real life brother plays his brother in this film (but he's probably the weakest actor here). I rate it 9/10, but subtract a point if Lisa Golm doesn't remind you of your grandmother!

Another Fine Tim Holt B Western

This is another of the good B Westerns that Tim Holt did for RKO from when he took over the franchise about 1940 through 1952, with a pause during World War Two for Air Force service. Besides the usual B+ values, including good comic relief by series sidekick Richard Martin, we get a slightly off-kilter performance by Hugh Beaumont (best known as the father on "Leave it to Beaver") as the chief bad guy and Gail Davis as the female lead for this episode -- usually this series featured competent and strong-willed female characters. I must say that I am particularly impressed by Miss Davis' performance here. Judging by her IMDb resume, she seems to have had a fairly undistinguished career. But given the strong writing in this movie, it's likely she was not so well served elsewhere.

Greed And Jealousy

Silver City is a slightly more complex tale of the west than is usual with the sins of greed and jealousy working overtime here.

Hard to believe but little elfin Barry Fitzgerald is one of the villains in this film. Barry plays a miserly silver mine owner who has leased one of his played out mines to Edgar Buchanan and his daughter Yvonne DeCarlo. That is Barry thought it was played out, but Edmond O'Brien has found a rich new vein and Fitzgerald is frozen out. Not if he can help it though.

Jealousy is what Kasey Rogers arouses in men. She's got her husband Richard Arlen who represents a big eastern mining concern all hot and bothered over here flirtations. One of those flirtations has been with O'Brien who used to work for Arlen. He's blackballed O'Brien from getting work with most outfits and O'Brien is picking up chump change from wherever he can.

Now how these two plot elements combine is for you to watch Silver City and learn. But I assure you the recipe delivers a good performance cake. I was most impressed with Fitzgerald in this one. The only other time I recall he essayed villainy on the screen was in And Then There Were None and we don't know he's the bad guy until the very very end. Also note Michael Moore in this cast, not the documentary maker, but an actor who sports a mean and sadistic disposition as another of Fitzgerald's cronies.

That most noted of color cinematographers Ray Rennahan does some nice work here, but Silver City could use a restoration. Check it out and see what I mean.

Who knew that Vincent Price could do comedy?

Who knew that Vincent Price could do comedy? To me, he is just hilarious in this movie. I especially love the scene where he is in the isolation booth watching to see how far Ronald Colman can get in his quest of winning the contest. Too bad this movie, and especially Mr. Price wasn't nominated for an Academy Award because it is a really funny film. I suppose to some people Vincent Price's performance in this film is a bit on the "hammy" side, it is exactly that way of overacting which makes it fun to watch him. Thank goodness I found this on DVD and can watch it anytime I want. Ronald Colman is also very good in one of his last films. Good performances by Celeste Holm and surprisingly by Art Linkletter!!
