"Appointment with Venus" author Jerrard Tickell, who also wrote "Odette", wrote that the germ of the idea for his novel, and delightful movie, came ten years or more in the past when he had a conversation with a Colonel "Duke" Wright in the British War Office. In 1940, Wright was O.C. at Guernsey and, with the fall of France, had the dangerous task of evacuating the garrison from the Channel Islands. After a nightmare journey, the exhausted, unshaven but triumphant Wright reported to the War Office at three in the morning that not a man had been lost. The junior officer who greeted him remarked what a pity it was that the Colonel had failed to bring any pedigreed cows with him. And added, "I suppose you couldn't go back and collect some." Tickell wrote that Colonel Wright's reply was as pungent as it was unprintable.

Adele Jergens as Reva, is what is best in this western.

When I was about ten years old and already had a passion for westerns, I used to pass in front of Cine Bandeirantes in São Paulo, a popular movie theater, and look for the posters of the coming attractions. When it was a western I used to hope that it would be restricted only up to ten years old. But that was not the case with "Sugarfoot" the Brazilian title being "Talhado em Granito", which was restricted up to fourteen. And I craved to see this film. Seeing it now, makes me aware one more time of how we change and the times change. This is a routine Scott western,which starts quite well as the characters are introduced. Most remarkable is Adele Jergens as Reva, a saloon singer with a strong personality. She does an excellent musical number about a guy she meets and thinks will order wine, but asks for two beers instead and for her to pay the bill. Raymond Massey, the villain and Scott arrive at the same time in Prescott, Arizona and each will go his own way on different sides of the law. Scott becomes friendly with S.Z. Sakall,( less of a caricature than in most of his films), and starts earning enough money to make a living and get married to Reva, but Massey is there to spoil his plans.The plot gets a bit too fast moving from about half of the film and I had to go back on the DVD to be able to understand. If you would take all the Scott westerns (leave the Boettichers out, they are all great) this one would be average

Golden Age devastation

The handsome Greek Lysias (blond Georges Marchal) only has eyes for the beautiful Hélène (Micheline Presle) but she's betrothed to the goddess Isis and can never marry. Arbax, the evil high priest of that pagan cult, wants Hélène for himself and Lysias's haughty fianceé will stop at nothing to break up the lovers ...and, oh, one of Lysias' female slaves would love nothing more than to be his love slave. As formidable as these obstacles are, they aren't the only ones on the rocky road to true love; throw in God's wrath over the culture clash between idol worship and Christianity and a potion that induces madness and all hell breaks loose...

Enjoyable Italo/French nonsense from the Golden Age that's thankfully not as boring as Hollywood's THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII ('35 version). There's good b&w special effects for the time but no real "sins" to speak of, alas, and as any Pompeii aficionado knows, the sea was boiling so there'd be no last-minute escapes in real life.

A Must If You Enjoy Bad Movies

Fourth film in the series has Jungle Jim (Johnny Weissmuller) investigating some gorillas that are attacking and killing people. It turns out that a doctor (Onslow Stevens) is looking for some gold hidden by the Nazies during WWII and he's having his men dress is gorilla suits to scare off the locals but Jim isn't fooled and plans on catching them all. I don't think there's anyone in the history of mankind who could actually argue that the Jungle Jim series was full of good movies. Even the best that the series had to offer were rather childish, stupid and at times downright silly and that's exactly what MARK OF THE GORILLA is. If you enjoy bad "B" movies then you should enjoy this thing but if you can't stand "so bad they're good" type of movies then it's best you stay far, far away from this thing. There's no question that this series was made for young kids and to give them something to do at the Saturday matinée but and the only way an adult could fully enjoy this series was for them to turn their brain off and not attempt to put any logic to anything you see. The entire plot is downright silly as the plan of Stevens never makes a bit of sense and you keep asking yourself how incredibly stupid could this guy be. There's one ten-minute sequence in the film where Jim has caught onto the guy and yet the doctor is able to attempt and kill Jim at least four times. It looks like after the third time Jim would do whatever he could to make sure it didn't happen again. The way the screenplay goes about making excuses for this guy as he does one bad thing after another just gets to be laughable. Weissmuller will always be remembered for playing Tarzan and his "acting" style is pretty forgettable here. He certainly can't deliver lines and there are several times where it appears he forgets his lines, has to think real quick and then say them. As campy as Weissmuller is he doesn't have a thing on Suzanne Dalbert who plays one of the supporting roles. She's not any better and her line delivery would make Weissmuller appear to be an Oscar-winning Shakespeare actor. Trudy Marshall doesn't add much of anything but Stevens (HOUSE OF Dracula) comes off the best. MARK OF THE GORILLA is just one stupid sequence after another but thankfully it's so corny and campy that you might find yourself being entertained.

enjoyable racehorse yarn - bit of an old chestnut!!

Interesting look at a bygone era of the early 50's in the London district of Lambs Green. But today we still love the GG's just like then. Some things never change. I was amazed at the way the bookies communicated with their colleagues in the stands (all line of sight). The film "dry rot" also showed them communicating odds with arm movements - fascinating, I've no idea what they were 'saying'. Seeing the old double decker buses brings back memories. They also had some real old buses that looked prewar as well. Lots of familiar British actors like Basil Radford playing the major and Joyce Grenville and Jimmy Hanley. Not a laugh out loud comedy more a comical drama post- Ealing production that apparently was based on an idea by the actor playing the Major. You can also catch sight of the 'Carry On' star Charles Hawtrey in a bit part. This film runs the gauntlet of emotions when bets of all sorts are involved. Just enjoy the ride and races.

June Allyson steals the show

A great example of movies made in an era where innocence was valued and innuendo was cleverly used to convey steamier topics which couldn't be given a thorough treatment outright. Using boxing as a vehicle, the movie deals with fidelity, racism, and the struggle in post WWII USA between those achieving the American Dream and those blocked out by class and ethnicity.

But forget all of that - June Allyson is simply beautiful as the strong-willed and spunky daughter of an Irish boxing promoter, and her real-life husband Dick Powell is uniquely sublime playing a "wannabe" beau with alacrity.

Great flick - just watch it and look at June's beautiful baby-face. There just aren't any actresses with those particular beautiful and innocent youthful charms today!

Cheerful Musical, and Oh Whatta Voice!

First of all, Ezio Pinza had a voice. If you've never heard an opera, you'll still respond to this man's singing.

Pinza had a lyric bass unlike anyone alive today, and it's the kind of sound that makes women sit up and take notice - it's an animal communication that has nothing to do with high culture.

Secondly, he's enjoying himself here. Like another refugee from the Metropolitan, tenor Lauritz Melchior, Pinza seems to enjoy acting in MGM escapist froth. His reactions while listening to a bad soprano are worth the price of admission right there.

The script is formulaic, the plot twists and turns visible a mile ahead of time, the overacting of the Italian characters very much of its era.

But they're all having a good time, and you'll have a good time too. "Mr. Imperium" is equally amiable, and features more great singing.

Disregard any negative reviews you may find here: you don't watch MGM musicals expecting "Anna Christie." This film knows exactly what it's doing, and it does just fine.

Just an excuse to show off Skelton's dramatic and comedic chops...but he infuses it with heart nevertheless

Reworking of 1931's "The Champ" is a predictable father-son wallow permeated with self-pity...but you have to expect that with this formula--without it, the movie would crumble apart. Story of an ex-Ziegfeld comedian who has fallen on hard times provides the perfect opportunity for Red Skelton to stretch some dramatic acting muscles, and he does not disappoint. Plus, his relationship with young Tim Considine is well-played, and the surrounding milieu of nightclubs and talent agencies is believable. Still, this script really goes out on a limb to give Skelton's Dodo an even break (he lands a TV gig!), and the heartache inherent in the finale is telegraphed from miles away. Skelton does his familiar comic routines, enjoying them himself as much as the audience does, yet in these instances he's playing to his popular persona and the semblance of an actual character slips away. We also didn't need a reprisal of the ballet sequence from "Bathing Beauty" inserted as a flashback, nor a running-away-from-home thread which is just shucked off. Screenwriter Martin Rackin seems shackled to the by-the-numbers recipe lifted from the previous version; yet if it works at all, this is due to Skelton's panache. Dimply-cute and sad-eyed, the nervous warmth Red imbues to his paternal scenes, as well as towards Jane Greer in a dressing-room meeting, is indeed moving. **1/2 from ****

satisfaction for seekers of the freaky

I agree with some comments made previously and I also disagree with a few comments. I concur that this movie has the feel of something from the 1930's that somehow got filmed in color. In my opinion that's not a bad thing cause I love the old suspense films from that era. Make no mistake, this is a C film working with very few resources. Its not a huge stretch to compare this movie with The Terror, the Corman/Karloff/Nicholson epic. There are similarities. The action takes place near the ocean in a creepy old castle with a creepy old man, there is a mysterious and very lovely girl, there is a mystery about the old man's wife, etc. etc. Dungeon of Harrow is sorta and even lower budget version of that low budget classic which I actually loved. There are some very cheesy moments which would have best been left out. The shipwreck is lame, the skimpy Santa Claus outfit Mantis wears is kinda really dumb, and the painting of the Manor is pretty weak.

It doesn't help much that the leading man has zero acting ability. He does kinda look the part which helps. Also, the film moves very slowly at times. However, the overall effect is sorta like watching some surreal play while doing acid. Not a bad thing!

The big payoff for me were the scenes when the leading man is tossed into the dungeon which was more like a massive tomb. What he encounters there actually manages to bring the audience a few moments of rather stark anxiety. The scenes in the "tomb" were awfully effective, I was creeped out.

I am familiar with some of the Director, Pat Boyette's, comic book illustrations. The man had an imagination and the ability to create weird visual images. At the end of the day this movie is one of those "what might have been with more money, real actors, real special effects, and a more experienced director." However, it still manages to be rather watchable for its bizarro value and some out of the box experimentation. I gave it a five because I did enjoy it reasonably well. Its quite a trip if you're into stuff that is sorta "out there." Check it out, its still showing somewhere out there on Planet Weird.

Escapist nostalgia

This was one of those unusual sequels: better than the original. It was the 2nd attempt at putting the adventures of PC 49 onto the screen, transferred from BBC radio, the 1st being filmed 2 years before in 1949. In those 2 years Hammer had come on by leaps and bounds with higher production values, better actors and acting and most of all better scripts. This still means that it creaks and abounds with those moments that contemporary serious people love to deride, so apart from it appealing to wide-eyes like me it can also draw cynical wasters too.

Meanwhile the plot is cohesive and absorbing: jewel heist complements and is a screen for an elaborate murder-of-a-millionaire plan, the hifalutin murderers themselves get targeted by their lower class drones who concoct their own elaborately vicious plan in revenge. Into this morass of immorality comes hook-nosed Brian Reece playing lanky PC 49 and Joy Shelton playing his astute fiancée Joan, who are playing their own hunches despite being continually handicapped by the staid unimagination of the Met police hierarchy. They needed an Inspector with the brains of Claude Teal, stolid Gordon McLeod had to suffice instead … Michael Ripper was here again this time as a reforming ex-con, but didn't he do life at Hammer? Favourite bits: the glamorous scenes in sexy Della's swanky penthouse apartment - how tastes have changed; The baddie contemplating the necessity of polishing off Joan but not enjoying one bit socking her on the jaw. The popular radio series ran for 112 episodes from 1947 to 1953, the BBC destroyed all but 2 editions and of course makes sure that no one will ever hear them.

To the believer, seventy-five minutes that can be well spent over and over again in the non-taxing company of some old friends, if you hated it kiss those seventy-five minutes goodbye forever!

Decent low rent thriller

Robert Ayres is driving down a country lane when he comes across someone laying in the middle of the road. Thinking it is someone who has been hit by a car he stops to see if he can help. What he gets for his efforts is a vicious belt to the head from a lead cosh. He is then relieved of his wallet and his car. Several minutes later having somewhat recovered, he staggers to a nearby farmhouse and collapses. He is found and a doctor is called. Meanwhile the car thief has made it about 30 miles before he takes a corner a tad fast and goes for an unwanted flight off a cliff. Needless to say that the car explodes taking care of the thief. Back at the farmhouse Ayres has regained consciousness. One slight problem though. He has no idea who he is or how he got to the farmhouse. The local doctor says to get some rest and the police say there are no reported missing persons. The farm owner and his daughter agree to house Ayres while he recovers. Several weeks go by and Ayres still has no memory of who he his. A search of his overcoat turns up a theatre ticket from a town 60 miles away. Ayres grabs a train had heads for the town. Once there he recognizes a large house. He enters and finds a coffin covered with flowers in the front room. A blonde, Christine Norden, enters and upon seeing Ayres screams and then faints. Ayres memory all drops into place! Norden is his wife and this is his house. It seems Norden thought Ayres had been killed in the car crash that killed the car thief. All is now well. Or is it? It seems Norden has been stepping out with another man and has plans of her own for the estate. She asks if anyone had seen him come home. "No", answers Ayres. "Go have a sleep while I make some calls. We 'll have a welcome home party tonight" she says. While Ayres is upstairs Norden makes a call to her lover to arrange Ayres upcoming demise. Of course her plan comes unraveled and Norden and her lover get their just deserts. This is a brisk moving 60 min thriller from the U.K. Directed by Vernon Sewell who did several very good little noirs, STRONGROOM, MAN IN THE BACK SEAT and UNEASY TERMS. Christine Norden did quite a few blonde bimbo roles before Diana Dors showed up on the scene.

What did we just see?

'People forget the unpleasant things. They only remember what they want to remember.'

In Rashomon the editing tells ½ of the story. It may feel experimental or unconventional, but Kurosawa perfects the concept second by second, directing and editing. This film didn't need a big budget to come perfectly to the point. It's a simple tale, but not a superficial tale. Different points of view and selective memories ('It's true! I saw it!') don't only make the woods unsafe, but are one of the most universal topics of humanity. 'We humans are weak creatures. That's why we lie, even to ourselves' says it all actually: it's about what people want to hear and when they start being interested at all, apart from wishful thinking. Selfish excuses vs trust in other people.

Rashomon gets masterful when in one instant there is literally a different point of view: the camera takes another position to shoot the same sequence, thereby forcing the audience to reconsider what they just saw. That is the sort of storytelling that the supposed masters of cinema in our time yet have to equal, or try to copy when they fail. Admitted 'Memento' (2000, Nolan) is a truly great one. Still not THAT universal. 'Pulp Fiction' (1994) didn't come close, 'La Commare Secca' (1962) also didn't. 'Ghost dog: the way of the samurai' (1999) touched another border of the concept, or does it?

The use of (non-original) music in my opinion reveals a certain interest for western influence, not only in Rashomon, but also in Kurosawa's forthcoming films, and is probably why his films were so influential on western filmmakers too.

The cinematography is dynamic and changes scene by scene to emphasize exactly what is going on. The shadows of leaves and branches, captured by cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa, make you really feel 'in the woods', while the actors (Toshirô Mifune, Takashi Shimura) convince the remaining part of the audience (which adds up to 100% breathless viewers). It may be after days that you first realize you saw an important film. After weeks you realize that you must see it again to comprehend (despite it's only 85 min), and ironically that is just one of the crucial points that Kurosawa made. 10/10

Great Leroy Prinz Choreography

This color remake of the landmark 'Gold Diggers' series of musicals of the 1930s is a pretty limp effort, despite individual bits that are excellent. 'Cuddles' Sakall is present for his usual Bavarian doubletalk, partnered, for some reason, with Wallace Ford playing a knife-throwing dessert rat. Dennis Morgan, tailing off in his Warners' career, plays the other guy. Basically this is a typical Warners musical of the era: a lightweight, retread plot and songs lifted from the catalogue. All it misses is Doris Day and she turned down the script.

The real point of this movie is the dance numbers, featuring lead Gene Nelson with choreography by Warners' stalwart dance director Leroy Prinz. Nelson never really became a star, but he was as fine a dancer as any, averaging much more athletic and balletic than headliners Astaire and Kelly; his signature step was a leap onto a table from the floor. Prinz directs him perfectly with monochromatically colored lights that allow him to act and move without words. 'Birth of the Blues' is the real highlight of the film.

Alas, aside from those moments, it's pretty much of a rote production. See it once for the dance numbers and be done.

Actionful tale of the War of 1812

The least visible war in US history is probably the war of 1812 with the British and other than The Buccaneer (filmed twice )I am unable to recall any movies made about it ,apart from this modest but reasonably effective action picture

Tension is building around the Northern border of the USA and the British are stirring up trouble by enlisting hostile Indians to their cause.Tecumseh (Jay Silverheels)is well disposed to the Americans but his more hot tempered brother ,known only as The Prophet(Michael Ansara)is openly at odds with him and challenges his authority over the tribe . The British incite The Prophet to raid settlements and they also have a nest of spies to keep them informed of goings on in the US settlements.Combating their nefarious schemes -well,nefarious if you are an American that is !-is the rugged American agent Steve (Jon Hall)who persuades Tecumseh to build "a model white town"at Tippecanoe and this immediately becomes a target for The prophet and his allies .Steve also finds time to romance the daughter of the local fur trader -who just happens to be a British spy and who Tecumseh is also in love with

The main virtues of the movie are its pace (brisk direction from Spencer Gordon Bennet)and some nice colour photography.Silverheels is fine as Tecumseh but the other performances are adequate ,no more than that .The ending seems rushed and has a curiously bitter sweet tang to it

This is a brisk B feature and will provide enjoyment if your expectations are modest and you enjoy lively period movies

Rebuilding of a family

Two girls: one lives with the father and the other with the mother.As they are twins they exchange their personalities and their parents do not notice it.They are trying to rebuild their family ,to reconcile them.This is the kind of stuff which might seem maudlin ,but Joseph Von Baky's treatment is pleasant,nay even interesting: the dreams scenes are the best as if the scenarists had read Bruno Bettelheim (whose book about fairy tales was yet to come).Germany was very fond at the time of those sentimental comedies .It was also Romy Schneider's debut and most of her films were of the same kind.

A movie for the whole family,actually for the parents provided that they still keep their child's soul.

A delightful and highly original comedy.

"La Macchina Ammazzacattivi" ("The Machine That Kills People") is an amazing film. It proves, along with De Sica's "Miracle in Milan", that a Neo-Realist film can be funny as well as surreal. What I mean by 'Neo-Realist' is that there was a style of film popularized just before WWII ended and it continued into about the mid-1950s. Because the studios were broke, they had to content themselves with making films without stars--using locals as well as local buildings and streets instead of sets. Most of these films are rather serious in tone, but this film (as well as the De Sica film) are ridiculously non-serious--and are both charming to boot.

The film is set in a small Italian town. Celestino is a photographer who thinks he's seen the dead patron saint of the village, St. Andrew. This 'saint' bestows on Celestino a great power--a magical camera that can kill! Fortunately, Celestino isn't blood-thirsty. But, when the leaders of the town all show themselves to be a greedy and selfish lot, he reluctantly (at first) uses this gift to punish the wicked. Eventually, however, Celestino goes too far--and this leads to one of the strangest endings I can recall seeing in an Italian film. Suffice to say that I won't say more, as I don't want to spoil the surprise--but it's worth it!

This is a very odd film in that the director, Roberto Rossellini, lost interest in the movie and left it on the shelf. Somewhere along the line, the studio had another director finish it and the film was released--and practically everyone hated it! But, today it's been restored and is a classic. I think that the dark comedy was just ahead of its time, as the film played badly then but works great today due to changing sensibilities. All I know is that I thought the film was wonderful--and it's definitely the best Rossellini film I have seen--and it's filled with many wonderful moments.

Paul Merrick, a writer of hit musicals, prefers to lie in the sun or play golf. He does so until he goes broke and asks to borrow a large sum of money, against future earnings, from his producer, Alex Conway. They are invited to a university, Paul's alma mater, to see a college production that is using some of Paul's music, and meet Katherine Holbrook, a student. Alex makes out the loan-money check to Katherine and hires her as Paul's secretary with instructions to give him only so much money per week after he starts to work on a new show. Complications arise when Paul meets Lorna Marvis, a society woman whose company is more expensive than the allowance Katherine is doling out to him.

Review :

A little too sophisticated for Bing

When this film first came out in 1950 it was like Babe Ruth hitting a double. The score by Burke-Van Heusen is serviceable for Crosby, a couple of nice numbers. In fact the best number in the movie is And You'll Be Home, sung at a college assembly by Bing who is later joined by the whole ensemble. Unfortunately it occurs in the first 20 minutes of the movie so then it's downhill.

Bing plays a golf loving composer who's lost his muse and would rather spend more time on the links and at the track then working. His producer, Charles Coburn, hires Nancy Olson who is a graduating student from Bing's alma mater as a secretary to keep Bing's nose to the grind- stone. That has complications for Bing's steady, Ruth Hussey and Olson's inamorata, Robert Stack. Suffice it to say that everyone winds up with someone in the end.

It's a show business story, but not one like those Judy Garland-Mickey Rooney let's put on a show. We got some sophisticated folks in this story, not the usual kind who Bing hangs around with in the normal course of his films. A whole lot of the film action takes place in Bing's Park Avenue penthouse and Crosby looks a little lost there. He has some funny moments with Ida Moore, Tom Ewell, and Richard Haydn.

Of course a show is the highlight of the film and one awkward moment comes when Charles Coburn is amazed at some of the show business types Bing's obtained the services for a preview of his new Broadway show. At one point Coburn remarks to Crosby, "there's Dorothy Kirsten of the Metropolitan Opera" like he doesn't know who she is. But the audience probably doesn't. Still it looks so phony when the next performer they run into is Groucho Marx. No one thought of giving Coburn a line like "there's Groucho Marx of the Marx Brothers."

Speaking of Groucho he and Crosby sing a duet of Life Is So Peculiar which Bing had sang earlier in the movie with Peggy Lee. The film should be seen for both versions of this number also.

If you love Bing as I do or if you want to see him sing with Groucho Marx and Peggy Lee by all means see this film.
