Twas a long time ago;most of us were not born;the Radiodiffusion Française did not broadcast all day.In the afternoon,the waves were up for grabs.It's a bunch of rejected artists' lucky break;in the south of France ,they create their own radio station (in France free radios were not allowed before the eighties)the first pirate radio station in the country.Of course it was illegal and soon the police are on their way to arrest them.There's a songwriter down on his luck,a handsome crowner (Philippe Lemaire) and his sexy girlfriend (Françoise Arnoul)whose father is a rich manufacturer (girdles!)who wants to marry his daughter to a four-eyes,plus some guest stars including Ray Ventura and his band ,and Henri Salvador parachuting down.

This is a musical,for songs takes up at least 30% of the movie,original ones ("A la Mi-Aout" is the stand-out)and medleys which highlight the musicians ' talent :a song can begin as Russian folk and then turn jazzy with snatches of vaudevillian tunes ("Tout Va Très Bien Madame La Marquise",Ventura's best song)."Nous Irons A Paris" is a pleasant movie by Jean Boyer if only for its spontaneity,its good humor and even its madness: the "pirates" find many a trick to fool the naive gendarmes ,they even have them pull a Chanson Réaliste "L'Hirondelle Des Faubourgs "live on the road .They even pretend they are mourners at a funeral.And the movie even takes a slap at commercials:the girdles sell if the commercial is negative! .In this context ,the appearance of George Raft (who has a rendezvous with "Une Belle Gonzesse " -slang for "a beautiful girl"-)is almost surrealist!

Atmospheric

Chilling and spellbinding, with supernatural elements which are so underplayed and low-key that you discount them until the end. Not to give anything away here, but if you watch this film - and you should - you'll be amazed as a denouement that anywhere else might seem hopelessly clichéd works here to the films advantage.

The bizarre love triangle of evil husband, faithful (and unsuspecting) wife, and his likewise faithful (yet secretly in love with her) brother does sometimes seems at odds with the eerie shots of the titular river, beautifully lit in black and white (which adds to the effect), but not to the detriment of the film.

Suspenseful, but awfully unpleasant...

Anyone who remembers Maurice Evans' kindly turn as Mia Farrow's friend in "Rosemary's Baby" may be shocked to find him so convincingly evil in this gripping melodrama. Ethel Barrymore plays a sharp, sensible woman who gets taken in by a con-man; he moves into her house and she quickly becomes his prisoner. The plot is infuriating (we in the audience feel like prisoners, too) and the inevitable turning-the-tables ploy seems to take forever to arrive. Still, Barrymore's plight is played to the urgent hilt, and Evans (along with his brutish cohorts, Keenan Wynn and Angela Lansbury) is downright despicable. The handling of this story, previously filmed in 1936 with Aline MacMahon, twists all the right screws with grueling accuracy, but calculated pictures like this may turn off many viewers before the final act. Ultimately, too many plot entanglements are left ignored and some crucial moments take place off-screen. Strictly as a masochistic thriller, however, the film is queasy and indeed suspenseful. **1/2 from ****

A beautiful, funny and a little naive film about a muse coming to earth

The muse is played by Bodil Kjer, at a time when her beauty peaked. The story involves a muse sent to Copenhagen to help a composer write a musical show. She falls in love with a man from the airforce and is soon haunted by her father Zeus, who want's her back and cannot allow the daughter of a god to mingle too closely with humans. This storyline is filled out with funny side-caracters and musical-shows that are clearly not American, but inhere lies the films charm. The acting is very good in all roles.

The plotline from the film Xanadu, seems nearly to be a ripoff (or can you call it a remake?).

campy harem spoof

Put Paulette Goddard and Gypsy Rose Lee together and you gotta admit that sparks will fly. Although Miss Lee is more suitable for this kind of high jinx, Miss Goddard does hold her own. Add John Boles as the Hassan and his son, played by Richard Ney (Mrs. Miniver) with Sebastian Cabot in a smaller role and look for Christopher Lee as a slave seller. I thought this was a riot. All the actors seem to play with tongue in cheek, which is Miss Lee's forte. Now mind you, John Boles, Stella Dallas fame and Richard Ney are distinguished actors. But here they let loose and along with Miss Goddard have a romp. Fun all the way through. And Paulette and Gupsy Rose make lovely Harem ladies.

The Flying Saucers are coming

The Flying Saucer was the first movie to deal with this subject and was one of the first sci-fi movies of the 1950's. Despite reading a lot of bad reviews about it, this isn't actually too bad.

A journalist and his "nurse" are sent to Alaska to investigate strange sightings of flying saucers over there. His "nurse" is with him because as he is undercover, he is in Alaska "recovering from a nervous breakdown". Not surprisingly, he falls in love with her during the movie. They make a hunting lodge as their home during their stay but the man who suppose be helping them to do odd jobs is actually a Russian spy and tries to kill the woman a couple of times. He has something to do with the saucer, which appears eventually. The spies are caught out at the end and one of them takes off in the saucer, which then explodes into thousands of little pieces.

There is some nice scenery in The Flying Saucer and the music score is quite good for a low budget movie.

The cast is mostly made up of unknowns with Mikel Conrad and Pat Garrison as the too main stars. Conrad also wrote the story and produced. He also appeared in another sci-fi B movie - Untamed Women in 1952.

Though not brilliant, The Flying Saucer is worth having in any sci-fi collection. Enjoyable.

Rating: 2 and a half stars out of 5.

Routine war-time romance.

This one would have gone to Venice in place of RASHOMON, if they had a sub-titled print and what a mess that would have made of film history.

It's a passable black and white account of the awfulness of civilian life during hostilities, with sensitive lead Okada more interested in pairing with the winning heroine than his soldier brother's lectures on manly spirit. His poetry writing student mates advocate Christian literature to ease his frustrations.

The brief happiness in the row boat or his producing a baby photo for her to work from for his portrait, brighten things. We could have seen more of the exploitative publisher, who has tank atrocities added to her work.

A So-so movie of a good book

This is an OK movie. Jose Ferrer plays the Georgian immigrant, George Papashvili whose book, 'Anything Can Happen,' is a classic story of an immigrant adjusting to life in the United States. The book has a charm that this movie doesn't approach. Too bad, as the cast was competent. Kim Hunter and Jose Ferrer don't really create much spark and even Oscar Beregi's character, the chef, dzea Vanno 'Uncle John,' falls a little flat. Ferrer does well, as he always did, playing the Georgian and even sings a charming little song. I might disabuse the other reviewer's confusion by noting that the Georgians are not Slavs (which term is usually reserved for Slovenians) but representatives of a totally unrelated culture living in the Caucasus mountains in Asia Minor. They are a fascinating people and Papashvili's book relates some wonderful experiences here in this new land. Unfortunately, the movie only gives us a sweet little romance but, I guess that's all Hollywood wanted at that time.

Breezy and relaxed western

Joel McCrea is very likable in carrying this breezy "B" western with a winning sense of humor and just the right amount of action. John Russell does his usual professional supporting job and Wanda Hendrix is delightfully offbeat as the love interest. Joel McCrea's talent for whistling gets a nice showcase. Not outstanding, but quite enjoyable.

This is a Wonderful Accounting of America's Greatness

Anyone who aspires to those things which have made America the greatest nation the world has known should own this film and watch it often.

A who's who of Hollywood in the period 1930 thru 1951, this wonderful telling of America's greatness shows a time when the liberal media was in check and Americans were taught to be PROUD of what we have built. A far cry from the liberal propaganda that is spewed on your 6pm "news" today.

Watch the opening interaction between Spencer Tracy and William Powell. If Powell's oratory does not move you to want to see the rest of this outstanding piece of American film history, you might as well book a one-way ticket to another country. Maybe you'd be happier there.

A wonderful film of America, for Americans. Easily 10 of 10.

An interesting film for fans of Mexican plot twisting musical dramas.

Where to begin? Perhaps by simply stating "this is a fine film." The black and white photography invites the viewer into an odd story of family intrigue capped by entertaining singing and song. I guess Ansiedad could be classified as a musical, but since all musical numbers are not stylized into the story (all music is on stage within the film reality - the characters are singers by trade) Ansiedad could be classified simply as drama. Hidden within this film is commentary on class structure, pursuing what one loves, and personal redemption. Pedro Infante turns in three fine performances. First as concerned father and husband of Libertad Lamarque, then as grownup twin sons. Apt camera angles and editing combines his twin roles simultaneously into several scenes. Not that I'm an expert, but this film stands as a fine example of the golden age of Mexican cinema.

ALRAUNE (Arthur Maria Rabenalt, 1952) ***

I had watched the best-regarded (if still rare) 1928 Silent version of this much-filmed German melodrama with Sci-Fi undertones during a previous Halloween challenge; while I recall precious little of that one at this juncture, having re-read my review of it, I know the remake features a different conclusion – as well as a different method of creation for the titular figure (the more realistic one of artificial insemination here instead of her emanating from the mandrake root, though the plant remains much in evidence throughout even now). Still, offhand, I would say that both films are equally effective – with the lead roles being especially well-filled: Erich von Stroheim and Hildegarde Knef (at her loveliest) in this adaptation replacing Paul Wegener and Brigitte Helm respectively in the earlier movie; leading the supporting cast, however, is Karl Boehm (who would excel in his later genre role in the British-made PEEPING TOM [1959]). As I said, events are not exactly fantastic – indeed, leaning more towards romance in the vein of two other much-filmed and horror-tinged classics, namely "The Picture Of Dorian Gray" and "Trilby" (often filmed as SVENGALI and whose 1954 British version, incidentally, also had Knef as its leading lady!) – but, then, Stroheim does keep a caged ape (which comes to no use other than as an added bizarre touch!) in his laboratory and, in any case, the result is no less stylish for that; all in all, this is ample proof that the Germans did not lose their touch for the Expressionistic with the advent of WWII! The premise, too, of a femme fatale turning the heads of several men, all of whom know one another and naturally fall out over her, is interesting for its distinct film noir trappings – in this case, extending to the rethought doom-laden climax that includes a murder and subsequent execution steeped in irony.

No woman on his own

Captain Carey,US Army (check the title) comes back to Italy to unmask an informer who gave his group away to the Germans .He thought that the Italian girl who helped him then was dead but she reappears ,à la "Laura" and she might be the one who....unless it's his husband (which is really too bad for he was in love with her of course)or some vile wop.

Ther's a good depiction of the Italian village and their hostility to the Yankee whose activities were cause for reprisals among the population.A woman is waiting for her husband 's name to be cleared ,for his young son (played by Rusty (Russ) Tamblyn oddly cast as an Italian kid) can't accept the fact that his dad was a traitor anymore.

Mitchell Leisen was in healthier shape in the precedent decade ,and "Captain Carey,US " does not compare favorably with earlier works such as "Hold back the dawn" or "to each his own" .However ,it is not as bad as the precedent user wrote .Average.

Mitchell Leisen made a volte face after this ho hum effort and gave a very good thriller "No man of her own" the best version of the William Irish novel.
