Review :

A pleasant change of pace.

This film might just take you by surprise. After all, in so many films Gary Cooper plays the bigger than life hero. And, in so many WWII films (especially those made during the war), the story is about bigger than life heroes. Well, as a nice change of pace, Cooper plays a woefully unprepared and not especially heroic guy in this war film set during WWII--but made a few years later.

The film begins with Cooper receiving his first command of a naval ship. This seems weird to him, as he's only a reserve officer and has zero experience with ships. To make things a LOT worse, it turns out just about everyone on his new ship has no experience either! Heck, they aren't even sure how to take the ship out of port--it's that bad. To make things even worse, the Navy is testing out a new engine--and they've installed it on this ship! They can't help but fail and the film consists of one problem after another trying to get this ship to sea. Overall, an interesting film that actually was pretty entertaining and mildly funny--and I liked that it didn't try hard for jokes but took a more casual approach. It also helped that Cooper had some nice support--with Eddie Arnold, Jack Webb, Millard Mitchell, Ray Collins and many other veteran supporting actors. And, interestingly, the film was a first for three soon to be big names--Lee Marvin, Charley Buchinsky (Charles Bronson) and Jack Warden. Well worth seeing and undemanding fun.

Into the French Canals

This movie has to be outstanding for it has stuck in my mind since I saw it in 1950. I cannot recall it ever appearing on television for I have watched out for it ever since.

There were two good reasons why I enjoyed it so much, the first being the beautiful innocence and beauty of Odile Versois at a time when I was still in my late teens and waiting for my call up. The other attraction of the movie was the French Canals. I suppose I was into all things French at the time having just made my first visit to that country the year before. I may not have been aware of the vast network of the Canals in France, though I had seen a little of them next to the Loire at Roanne.

I see that it is billed as a comedy though that the funniest thing I remember is the Dinghy trailing behind the yacht crossing the English Channel and what is in it. Aside from the attraction of Odile there is the wonderful acting by Jack Hulbert and Michael Wilding.

If only this would appear on TV at least once or turn up on a DVD.

A dull teen role for Margaret O'Brien after her MGM days were over...

I've never been a big admirer of MARGARET O'BRIEN, so it should come as no surprise that I disliked this dull teen-age story about a budding romance at summer camp (based actually on a Herman Wouk novel about a Jewish boy growing up in New York City)--but even I have to admit that there was very little she could do to overcome such a weak script. She was at the so-called "awkward age" for this outing at Columbia and it shows.

Nor does the rest of the cast do anything to lift the picture from the ordinary. ELINOR DONOHUE is unpleasant as her rival at camp and ANN DORAN does her usual competent job as Margaret's mother, but nothing really helps although LLOYD CORRIGAN lends some sturdy support.

It's a trite and banal script and it's a shame that studios couldn't find better material for child stars once they reached that certain age.

Best to skip this one, unless you're a real O'Brien fan.

Courtroom drama with Walter Pidgeon at the helm

Walter Pidgeon is Braley Mason, a civil attorney who takes on a criminal case in "The Unknown Man," a 1951 film also starring Ann Harding, Barry Sullivan, Keefe Braselle, and Richard Anderson. A great believer in justice, Pidgeon accepts a pro bono case defending a young man, Rudi Walchek (Braselle) accused of murder and gets him acquitted. Shortly afterward, he realizes that the man is guilty and was extorting protection money from his victim as well as other shopkeepers in the neighborhood. He is advised by the DA (Sullivan) that Rudi is small change, that to wipe out the organized crime, one has to find the top man. Mason finds the top man, and is faced with a dilemma.

"The Unknown Man" is a small, black and white film that manages to hold the viewer's interest with its various plot twists, though the plot is somewhat contrived. It's really the story of a good man seeking his god, justice, and what he is willing to do in order to attain it. And that's the most contrived part of all. I suppose there was a time before O.J., the Menendez Brothers, etc., etc., when people believed in justice and the integrity of attorneys. For this viewer anyway, those days are long over.

Walter Pidgeon does an excellent job -- his handsome, elegant demeanor and declamatory voice show us a successful, confident man but also a deeply caring one. Pidgeon had a magnificent career spanning 60 years but never really rose to superstardom. He was a solid actor who could play just about anything and did. It may be because by the time he was getting leads, he was well into his thirties and missed being a matinée idol; or it could be he lacked that certain something; or that he was typed early on as second lead to a big female star like Greer Garson. Hard to say. He gives an honest and touching performance here.

Very good movie with good performances.

The Theme Music will tear your heart out !

A young couple are found dead in a car and the film is basically a flashback over the period preceding their deaths to find out why. The police inspector investigating is played by Louis Jouvet, a great French actor of long ago. I was most impressed by the theme music which created within me as much if not more emotion than that of "Le Diable au Corps" though the composer of this one was Paul Misraki (that man must have been a genius, he wrote so many lovely tunes) and that of Le Diable au Corps was written by Rene Clöarec. The film itself is to me less emotional than Le Diable au Corps, but nevertheless very good (but the plots aren't the same ). However, performances of all actors were very good especially Jouvet. Picture quality is fairly mediocre, let us hope that it will be remasterized and edited on DVD !

A Simple Jerk of Fate

After a tonsillectomy, hyper-maniac Huntz Hall (as Horace DeBussy "Sach" Jones) begins crooning like Bing Crosby (a fine dubbing imitation, by John Lorenz). Enterprising Leo Gorcey (as "Slip" Mahoney) turns the ageing youngsters' "Sweet Shop" hang-out into "Bowery Palace" with help from piano playing pal Gabriel Dell (as Gabe Moreno) and "Bowery Boys" William "Billy" Benedict (as Whitey), Buddy Gorman (as Butch), and David Gorcey (as Chuck); there, Mr. Hall becomes singing sensation "The Bowery Thrush". Alas, criminally-minded rivals want a piece of the action…

Formulaic to a fault, with highlights being sweet 'n' sexy guest stars, like Phyllis Coates (as Sally Dolan) and Adele Jergens (as Lola Stanton). Note, "Blues Busters" features the last appearance of Mr. Dell, an original "Dead End" kid, in the Bowery series.

At War In The Army

'At War With The Army' starts off a bit messy and much of the humour feels a little dated. The first half hour is a little out of place but some of the jokes get you through it. However, it is the latter half that I enjoyed the most. The slapstick and situational comedies keep the viewer highly entertained, whether it's the sequence with Lewis dressed in drag and adjusting his voice trying to sound like a woman (having the effect opposite to the intended). I also enjoyed the songs in this part of the movie. It is perhaps common opinion that Martin and Lewis are a formidable comedic duo on screen. Their impressions in the final sequence and the on screen banter are amongst the highlights of 'At War With The Army' and the plus, easily outweigh the negative. This may not be the best of what the duo have accomplished but thanks to them it's good enough entertainment.
